Polishing or painting control arms and spindles?
Thursday, July 08, 2010 6:27 PM
Just wondering if anyone has polished and clear coated their aluminum N-body spindles and control arms? I know that misnblu hit his with a wire brush. I was thinking about polishing mine up and clearing them like I would an engine component. I really like to have a "clean" car. I know that this is exposed to the elements, and no one would ever see it but me, but I would know. I hate seeing the crud under my car when I work on it and was wondering if this would make it easier to clean. Thanks in advance.

i would just blast them and have the cleared with a good automotive clear. Prolly the best route for a non trailer queen show car.

so jealous of gary's arm's. really wish i had spent the time to do that. however, mine is exposed to the elements all year unlike his.

I've been going back and forth between powdercoating and anodizing on mine, but lately I've been having fun polishing stuff, so I have given it some thought of making them mirror finished. I have a few sets of N-body spindles, so maybe I'll polish one set up and see how I like it, and post some pics.

I was too lazy to polish although it wouldn't have been that hard to do so.
Since I was more worried about the performance aspect of the mod over the aesthetics, I just decided to wire brush the arms instead of the full boat polish.
I must say though that gary's control arms give me a chub for sure. NIce work and was my inspiration for doing the control arm mod in his how to a few years back.

ill be getting my aluminum arms chromed here pretty soon, hopefully a set of malibu aluminum knuckles as well but we'll see...

i know scott lafngas clear powdercoated his and they looked like brand new aluminum. best part is they will stay that way.

I am still debating on what color my control arms will be ( chrome, bronze or body color powder coat )

Not to change the subject but does anyone have a picture of stock Jbody spindles next to N body Aluminum ones??

I bought a blast cabinet and have finished the front suspension clean up. Now on to the IRS rear. Hopefully I will still have the motivation to polish after everything is clean.

Out of curiosity, what media did you chose to go with?

I used the glass beads from harbor freight 80 grit, it is very gentle on the aluminum. Nice satin finish.

Yeah, I like glass bead on aluminum. I was just curious, because a lot of people just get Black Beauty and use it for everything.

I like glass bead on aluminum over Black Beauty, but it is really personal preference.
