Another unexplainable noise thread
Monday, September 13, 2010 11:24 AM
I have this noise going on in my '04 Cavalier thats been driving me nuts. Heres the run down: If I am driving on a smooth road, there is no noise. However, if I go over bumps, I can hear a rattling/creaking noise that lasts a few seconds then goes away if Im on smooth pavement, otherwise it will continue until im over the bumps. I checked the front end, everything is tight, and the front and rear struts were just replaced a week ago. I thought replacing the struts would make that noise go away, but its still there. Any suggestions?

Did you replace the strut mount? The rubber bushing at the top? I know my gf's sunflower was making this weird creeking noise kinda like you explained. Turned out to be the mount was getting dryed out and started to crack.

What did you replace the front struts with?

Yeah, definitely sounds like a strut mount issue.

Strut mounts for sure. Our stock mounts suck it hard.

Don't want to thread jack, but what's the best replacement mount? Monro? KYB's? AC Delco?
Wasn't there a replacement semi-solid mount with the camber and caster adjustments? I don't remember seeing who made them....

Dont mind at all, Sunfiretun3r, was thinking the same thing myself. Honestly, Im probably just going to leave it as it is, just gonna keep the radio turned up. I decided that I'll tackle the issue when it comes time for FE suspension work and just take care of everything once I have to get back under there. Since school started, my motivation to work on non-critical problems has plummeted big time.

I'll probably do a stock replacement when I do finally do it; but I dont know if that would just be replacing the crap strut mounts with more of the same crap? To answer your question, Lenko, my struts were replaced with Gabriel Ultras, have no complaints so far, the ride is (almost) comparable to my Buick Skylark.

I know whatcha mean cavaclismic, I'm too busy to work on my car, but if something has to be done, I just get a day off, and do as much of everything as I can.

And yeah, Monro, KYB and AC Delco all make Original OEM designed mounts. I was just curious if any one manufacturer was any better than the others.

No, no worries man, I knew what you were talking about. I know overkill. I should have explained better too. I was talking about the company that makes the original strut mounts the best, not the solid mounts that Overkill makes. The ones the come on the car off the factory floor.

oh gotcha. i don't know then but i would assume that it's basically the same thing as factory replacement struts. they're not rated for a drop, neither are the stock strut mounts. but that's just a guess. although getting new factory replacements would be better than original factory mounts for a drop.

The OEM (overkill engineering) mounts are worth every penny. The feel much more solid overall, and handle the abuse of lowering.

Yeah I'll probably end up with them, but I need a new mount like now, so I figured I'dgrab a cheap $40 that should last a tleast 6 months or so before I get overkills mounts.

I see a lot of people saying struts here but i have a solution that my car does pretty nasty. I get a lot of creaking and rattling from my dash and other interior parts, i put some little rubber pieces in some of the dash connections which cut down on it slightly but i can't seem to completely eliminate it. Something you may want to check. My sister's sunfire does the same and it's her interior too. If it's cold i get it even worst.

Lower control arms.Look at both of them with the car on the ground or on a drive on lift, see if 1 of the rear bushings looks different than the other. This is a problem on the 95 up J bodys.easy to replace but u have to take the control arm off.
