GXP 13" front brakes fit on N body spindles?
Sunday, March 29, 2009 3:55 PM
I was reading about this setup and I'd really like to have the 13" up front to really help stop the car so my questions are will the GXP parts fit on the N-body spindle ( which I already have installed on my car ) and which calipers will bolt right up GXP or LS1 Fbody?

haven't seen it on here. where did you read up that the GXP brakes will bolt up to the n-body spindle? yes the LS1 brakes will bolt up to the n-body spindle.

Yea look at the last page or few pages of the NFW sticky at the beginning of this forum and you will see a post by Speedracer I believe where it's mentioned.

the GP guys are putting GXP brakes on theres i haven't compared the bolt size but if not you will have to switch from a 12 to 14mm bolt which is nothing to do

First, the very first sticky in this forum has all the answers.

Second, you'd have to have racing slicks for the extra stopping power to make any difference. Either that or doing some kind of endurance racing where the brakes would have a chance of overheating.

GXP Calipers and Rotors are a little bit of work, as mentioned. You have to drill and tap the knuckle, not a huge deal, but it requires tools most hobbists don't have.

I have GXP brakes on my lumina. In all honesty the 98-02 calipers from a Camaro are the exact same thing. All you need to do is get the caliper bracket and mod that up.

OEM I am currently running the aluminum front a-arms, spindle and brakes from a 99 GAGT, so my question is will your 13" W body brake kit fit these spindles? I have Tein SS coilovers all around if that makes a difference.

i know the dual piston w-body calipers/brackets do not directly bolt on to the aluminum grand am spindles. i bought the calipers at the junkyard in hopes they would.

Yes, and that is what the NFW sticky is all about: N-body Aluminum spindles, dual piston F-body calipers, and W body 12" rotors.

So maybe I could add the GXP 13" rotors and make a bracket to move the caliper an inch higher. I guess I'll just buy the parts and see if it will work, at the worst I'd have to sell the 13" rotors and get 12" rotors but at the best the 13" setup would work and that would be great.

will your car even utilize the 13" brakes? our cars aren't that heavy to need the 13" setup. unless our goin for looks or racin around a track and need the stopping power, in my opinion it's a complete waste. just go w/ the 12". or if you are wantin to the best first so you can toot your horn, go right on ahead.

Well I'm almost done with my turbo 2.3/2.4 hybrid and if I hit my target whp/wtq I should be in the range of Boosted 2point4 who was making 486whp last year and is shooting for 500 - 550 whp this year. And with that much power on tap I'd rather have more brakes than I need then not enough, not that 12" fronts wouldn't be enough.

There is a link in the NFW thread to the N-body guys who are upgrading to the GXP brakes. It should answer all of your questions.

look at it this way.... camron is running a 10.2 @ 140mph.... on bone stock brakes, not even upgraded fronts. cheap autozone brakes.... So I would say you will be just fine with 12" brake kit and get to keep the same bolt patter all the way around to be able to rotate the tires.

That has to be scary as hell. I have surface stress cracks starting in my rotors and they're not even though one pad cycle yet and I'm not even close to that fast. Not to mention 1 stop from the triple digits cooks the stockers. Of course I'm a lot more abusive to my brakes than some drag car. I still think that a stock setup with parts store pads is down right dangerous when you're making more than 200 wheel, heck on some days I cant even lock up the star specs and they're only 205's. Once we figure out a way to do the nwf swap with 5x100 bolt pattern I'll be all over it.

thats what i said. not only does he make one pass, me makes SEVERAL passes a day/night. ill be happy when i get to make the swap to the wilwood kit. that should suffice for me I would think. Who knows when that will happen.

I'll run the numbers but the 12" NWF or NWC swap should be more than enough, even on r-comps. And if its not enough we could think about a smaller bore master cylinder.
