Another fix for those with EasyStreet clunking....
Sunday, April 11, 2004 12:28 AM
Hey guys,

I talked with Jim (at Air Lift) again on Friday. A little bit about the clunking and some about the bash

Anyways, here is another possible fix for the clunking issue, if you are having it.

-take the front struts off the car
-set the dampening level all the way to the left (softest)
-cycle the strut 3-4 times

The reason for this is because during shipping when the struts are on their sides air bubbles are created inside the strut.

He told me this *should* hopefully cure your issue if you're having it.

That is close, but leave them on the car, and turn them all the way the the hardest setting. Cycle them through a few times.

Remember when I said that we could not get our car to reproduce that sound.... we do this before every install. The problem is that if they sat on their side for extended periods of time (on the shelf or shipping) air bubbles can set in causing the strut to rattle. Easy fix for a lot of the problems.

Since I have been gone, I have lost track with who is where on this rattle thing. I am opening the door again! If you are still having the problems, E-mail me! I don't want anyone to settle for a sub par set up. E-mail me either way, If you are having a problem, or if everything is fine. I want to keep informed

Thanks again for all of your patients.

Did this fix anyone's problem? Is anyone else still having the clunking?? Did anyone do anything imparticular to fix it? I've sent my struts back and they're looking at them now, just seeing who else was still having a problem or who fixed theirs.

I have Phatcubs struts here now, and one other pair of fronts. We still have not been able to reproduce the sounds. There are a LOT of variables though. It could be the strut, the mounting, it could be on a car with 297,000 miles ....ect. The stock cavalier that we tried them on is a 01 4 door with about 60K on her.

I can only help out the people that contact me! I have posted before, if you have a problem....call me! I am here WAY more than I should be Here is my number again, 1-800-248-0892 ext 252. This is the same strut that is on our Neon, Grand Am, Grand Prix, and a few others. I am just not haveing that problem. I know we will get to the bottom of it.

Once again, give me a call or e-mail me if you are having this problem. I will find an answer! I don't want ANYONE mad at me when I show up at the bash!

Thanks Guys!

Yeah I had that too, ESB said it's cause the bag creates a vacume, but it sounds like plastic popping, not a good sound. Hopefully this'll fix it.

OK that paticular sound made when lifting after being all the way down is in fact the bag breaking a suction from itself. Its just a thing bags do. its no problem at all. My neighbors truck does it also.

THe bottom portion of the frotn bags dont ahve a role plate. when the air lets out the bag rolls down on it self and seals just like a suction cup would. When you add air the bag lifts and breaks that seal makking the pooping sound.

Im not just guessing here eather yall. I ran my front lines into a T and used my home air compressor to slowwly lift the front while I was lieing in perfect position to the see the front bag as car slowely lifted.

You can try yourself if you have a long cord on switchbox. But it may be too fast to notice.

Every now and then I'll lift car, but not enough to break that suction. THen out of noware it will pop up bit. Its no big deal really.

BUT!!!!!!!!!!! I still have that clanking sound coming from front when Im driving. I posative that it has got to be those upper mounts. Metal to metal is going to make noise. The rubber bushings may keep the strut from going up or down but they dont stop that shaft from going side to side in that little bit of space they have.

Ive been thinking of tring to use my 00 stock uppers. Anyone tried this? Im not sure is shaft size is the same or not. I'd like to check it out soon.
Heres a pic of what I THINK may be the problem.

Now easystreet said this lorger hole is so that the strut will have some play from side to side twisting . Which im not arguing. I totaly understand that.

Im thinking maybe some kind of urethane ring inside would help.

Pahtcub------You have had your struts off car now after use. I have not yet.
Have you noticed any ware and tare on the shaft at the location that rest in the upper mount?
Definately would have to AGREE with you on that. Common sense would tell youn that anytime you have metal to metal contact, you are going to have a 'noise' isssue.

im surprised i dont have any clunking. i do have two little dimples in my friggin hood from them though...that pissed me off. maybe its from the shaft lightly hitting your hood...just a thought...ive never heard it so i dont know how loud it is.

Might be the big hole but then why do some people dont have it?? I mean I can swerve back and forth like there's no tommorow and not have any problems, it's just over bumps, I noticed when I changed my mounts to the new ones Jim asked me to check that the two allen screws that kept the bag in place were loose, but I tightened them and it stil happened so I figured it wasn't that.

There are different problems for different people. I don't think that all of them are strut related. I am sure some are. ESB is one smart cookie. He has hit on a lot of valid points. One that was left out though is "bump steer". If you do not get an alignment after you replace your struts, you could hear a lot of strange things.

C Cooper, I still only know of 4 people, now counting ESB, that have the problem. I have sold quite a few in the last few months. I believe that these are isolated problems. Good news though, it looks like your struts will leave Monday morning. By the way guys, this is a dealer problem, not ours

ESB, Phatcub, Give me a call today if you have time. I would like to have you guys talk to our engineers. They have some ideas, but no sense in "shooting in the dark"

Phatcub, if this thread dies soon....I may just take you up on your offer

Thanks again guys.

my struts clunk like crazy. It's almost as bad as when i had koni's and hp coilovers. I expected the EAI kit to be stock suspension quiet.
Re: Another fix for those with EasyStreet clunking

it sounds to me like the metal plate (upper mount) on the inside of the strut tower could be making the noise, just an opinion. did you guys wrench yours down tight? try putting a piece a rubber in between there. but then again why wouldnt mine do it
