Need Help with Koni Kit Install, Dust Boot trouble
Saturday, April 02, 2005 10:17 AM
Ive got it all torn apart right now, and IM rebuilding the strut, but have a problem. The Konis have a new cap that goes down on the damper, it does not have the same size as the cap on the old strut, so the dust boot for the damper does not reconnect?!?
Anyone else have this problem, The old cap wont fit on the damper.
Right now I just zip tied it, any other ideas on what to do, ?
Thanks in advance,
-erik

i used the stock one myself, just drilled out the hole to 1/2 inch and put it back on, no problems in about 6 months. I have a Install how to if you haven't read it I have a "how-to" just click the link below my Sig. if it doesn't work drop me a line, i have it saved on my HD.

I tried putting on the stock one, it seats down about 1 cm, but not the full length meaning there is a large gap of space left in between, this is because the stock cap bevels inwards on the inside of it. I could always drill that out to the diameter of the shock, that is something I could possibly try. Im going to look and maybe see if there is an aftermarket solution, maybe new boots, somebody else must have had this problem by now. I doubt its very good for the shock to not use the dust boots.

I will post some pics, I got the rears in right now and its sitting level so i must have done something right!b Its a pretty good drop in the rear over OEM, it looks pretty balanced, right now it looks like i have the trunk piled with bowling balls.

The first time I drilled out the rear upper strut mount I got it to hot (got too happy with the drill press) and thus I melted the rubber and the metal sleeve started twisting and pulled out of the rubber mount when I backed the bit out. Well I was panicked by this point because I had no clue where to find another mount, I checked at Ghettozone and they said they didn't carry them, but I found a small part shop across town that had one. I did the next two with no problems, I got a bucket full of icewater and just did a little bit at a time and kept dunking the mount to cool it down so the rubber didn't heat up and give way.

BTW Cinny I used your guide it was helpful, Im not sure why you put a washer between the bumpstop and the metal dust cover cap, I left that out.

when i installed mine, the caps that were sent with the koni's were broken. So, i took my dremel and reemed the old caps out to fit over the koni's. All you need is a little elbow grease.

there is a beveled washer that sits on a "ledge" near the top of the strut the dust boot and the "cap" fit on top of that, is that what your asking about ? also if you got the
"Koni Sport Kit" it may /most likely will have different parts than if you just got the Koni yellows themselves. if you have a digi cam get a picture and post it up or catch me on AIM i will be of more help.

it should be starting from the bottom-up

1 strut> 2 ss ring for the spring perch> 3 spring perch >4 bump stop> washer>
5, pushed into the dust boot>6 metal cap> 7 spring over all that> 8 strut mount> 9 washer on top> 10 nut., bolt it back on the car.
