One quick question before lowering - Suspension and Brake Forum

Has anyone had troubles changing a tire being lowered using the OEM jack that comes with a sunfire/cav? I got my pro-kit-AGX combo on it's way in transit and just thought of this today.
Is there enough clearance to get the jack under the car? I know it's only 1.4"front/rear which isnt that much but when I have streetfire sides and the front/rear valances on my car I worry about getting it under there if I ever had a flat tire.
Also being 1.4" lower do you think I should remove my front valance during this winter coming up? Do you think I should remove my Streetfire sides? I think they have held up quite good over the past winter but being lowered now i'm wondering if the sides will hold up.
I dont think there will be a issue with the rear. I think I may just have to remove the front valance for winter. I'm going to get a front bra cover also to protect the paint from rocks/chips.

J
well if your using a OEM jack, its a scissor jack, i highly doubt you'll have any trouble fitting it into place. now the thing with the front and sides in the winter. well on my '97 and winters out here, i've had my driver side torn off and my front is always packed with snow by the time i get to whereever i'm going. i'm not lowered and i have the oem z24 front. i remember on my 2nd gen that i had lowered, if there was a fair amout of snow on the roads..i would get snow packed around my coil packs. since i didn't want that to happen i bought some rubber spring spacers for trucks and trailers cost me like 10 bucks. jacked the car up inserted the spacers and it liftered the car 1 inch, then when summer came i just removed the spacers. didn't cause any probs what so ever

If you need to... drive the car onto like a 2x4 or piece of wood. then you can fit the jack under the car.
The stock jack is the best ive ever used to get extreamly low cars up off the ground when I didnt have 2x4s or 2x6s to drive onto.
I am all that is man

agreed but my buddy got a jack from i think a dodge caravan and it lays completely flat. its the best stock jack i have even seen.
people usually only have a problem when their lowered w/ kits. i know i have to drive on 2x4s and i have to lower my one side just so the factory jack will clear the side skirt when i jack it up. if you dont have a kit then you should be fine and not need the 2x4s
I only have sportlines with a razzi kit. I'm about 3 1/4" off the ground....gm jack works great for it.

Very cool guys thanks for the information. I was just curious about the "WHAT IF" you know. Never really thought about it until this morning if I ever did get a flat. I hope not but who knows.
Well I havent had a problem with the rear valance in winter just gets a little filled up with snow but I always knock it out. But I think the front will have to come off now once I'm lowered.
The sides held up damm good this winter. No problems at all. The odd time I have hear some snow scraping under my car when changing lanes and so forth but that is usually only under heavy snowfall in late winter. Usually the roads are kept pretty clear around here.
Does anyone know where the best place to pick up a front bra for a 00 SE front bumper would be?

bras are ugly
i didnt have a problem using the stock jack to paint my calipers and drums... i found you have to raise the car alot higher than if the car was stock height but it wasnt anything hard....

Thanks for the info guys. Ya well I know a bra isnt sexy for winter but I need to protect the paint on the front of my car. After doing the SE swap the paint is pretty new and want to keep it looking that way.

Just in case you didn't know, the bra protects from chips yes. But when you take it off the paint under it will be destroyed from moisture that sits under it. I've seen a few people take their bra off the car and its a major difference in color on the hood. Just a fair warning. Think twice about it man.

I actually found a hydraulic jack that just barely fits under the car with the Pro-kit on. It's a "Big Red" jack I think... the only one I've ever seen - it was cheap on clearance in a dusty corner of K-mart. So much easier then dealing with that scissor jack. The scissor jack fits under the car but it takes forever to lift it high, and if you use it as your primary jack like I did you'll quickly wear off the rubber handle and then the pivots till it isn't safe to use anymore.
Has anyone else found floor jacks that start real low?

oh and I like that idea EdgeZ24. Is this safe for the Eibach Pro-Kit? Will it damage the springs?

la bra cover only damages the paint from moisture and such if its not cleaned. meaning when you wash your car. you take off la bra and clean it also..let it dry then slap it back on. most ppl wash there cars with it on then complain afterwords about there paint. put it this way. take a towel soaked in salt/water and acid rain, now fix it to the center of your hood..keep wetting it every now and then, of course your paint is going to be wasted..same function as la bra not being cleaned. the only downside i can see from la bra is when the sun doesn't shine on that part of the hood causing the rest of the paint to fade, and this is over a very extended period of time.

well i had done this with my 2nd gen and it had the pro-kit, no damage was done. only thing was come summer it had to settle for about a week, once the spacers were removed
^^^not necessarily. i had my 03 cav for no more than 3 months and i shaved the mouldings on it. there was a bit of discoloring from just those 3 months. and the car was only sitting on the lot for a month when i got it, thats 4 months to cause paint fade in my experience. granted it wasnt noticeable to most, but it still faded
