I have a '00 Sunfire 2dr. that is making a rattling noise when turning the steering mainly to the right. Happens at all speeds including during parking.
The dealer tells me that the right strut mount is suspected at a cost of $750. I'm told the mount is where the spring sits inside the strut assembly? I can't believe this is such a costly part.
Anyone have any thoughts/recommendations on this? I have a GM service manual but can't find any reference to strut mounts. A picture or description of what the mount is would be appreciated.
We inquired about GM's service bulletin suggesting a power steering hose restrictor and were told that this is not necessary in this case.
a strut mount should cost no more than $75 max, and even thats a bit pricey. it can be bought at your local autozone, advance auto, pep boys, etc.

Did the dealer look at the car, or just guess based on the symptoms?
Based on your description, my guess would be a bad outer CV joint on
an axle, probably the right one. Look where the axles enter the hubs and
see if a boot is torn.
Strut mount shouldn't be very much. If I'm thinking of what he's talking about there's no way it should cost that much. You can have that strut off in 15 minutes, buy a spring compressor (20 bucks), and buy a new one and replace it yourself. Put it back on and you're done. At most it should take an hour.
