I would like to know who has had to replace their rack and pinion, and if there's any special problems involved.
I have a 99 2.4 103,000KM (not miles) on it that needs a new rack.
I have the new rack and would like to do the install myself. I have done this kinda stuff on volvos and hondas. Have the Haynes shop manual. Read it and feal ok with tackling the job. I wont be at home in my garrage. I'll be in a full service shop with all tools and lifts etc.
Let me know what you ran into while doing the install, what you needed on that Sunday afternoon at 6:00pm and how smooth the job is.
Thanks

you shouldnt have a problem if you are going to be in a shop with tools and equipment, however be careful when you remove and install the steering shaft onto the rack, you dont want to have it too far off, and also be sure the tie rod ends are even and when attatched back to the car that your wheels are as straight as possible. i would also recomend you do an alignment afterwards just to be on the safe side.
hm i think ive done something like this i remember reading it in the manual when i put a new inner tie rod on?.. only thing that was a bitch is getting the yellowish cap off for the big bolt.. and getting te nut loose because u could only move verrry small amout at a time..

Alignment is in order for sure. The car pulls right as is.

So I get the friggin thing loose, the x-member down etc etc.
NO TOOL CLEARANCE FOR THE PRESSURE AND RETURN AT THE RACK!!!
I had the car up on the lift and could not for the life of me figure out how to get the Pressure & return lines off at the rack. besides the fact that they are rusty, there's no clearance NO CLEARANCE even with the rack loose in there and twistable to get a good angle. The best angle I got was good enough to get a flare wrench on the fitting, THATS IT no room for moving no no no no no.
So im at a loss.
How do I get the rack OUT of the car. Wudoo I gotta do....take the lines off at the PUMP side? Then it looks like it wont clear the X-member / chassis etc.
HELP

well if your haveing so much trouble clearing the front sub frame, why don't you just drop it, it'll prob take you 20mins in a shop, just use a tranny jack to help you out. once removed it'll be just dangling there with loads of room

5inchs..k but i'm talking about takeing it off completly. you pop off the ball joint from the knuckle, take the bolts off that hold the sub-frame in place and then all you got left are the 2 bolts holding the rack and the lines..your doing an alignment ne-waz so who cares if you pop the ball joints. like i said use a tranny jack to lay the sub frame on and its off in 20mins flat..doesn't take long at all..its pretty easy if you have the air tools ..1 man job with tranny jack stand..or 2 ppl by hand
do you mean the a-arm ball joints?
