Torque steer after control arm install
Monday, May 02, 2005 1:21 PM
I just recently installed the prothane control arm bushings (on the 04 fire). Now when i'm on the freeway above 55 mph, I accelerate and the car moves noticebly to the left, and when I let off it moves back to the right.

Does anyone else notice this movement?
Did I do something wrong?

I also skipped the the alignment cause I didn't see how it would affect the geometry of the suspension.

Thank you c.o.
But I don't think that's the problem.

Anyways I wanted to post a review also.

A little bit stiffer than the stock bushings. handles a lot better. Takes turns (depending on turn) 2-3 mph faster. First time I launched right after the install I still go wheel hop, but after testing it further today I got VERY little to none. It did take me honestly about 6+ hours. Taking out the control arm was the longest part along with jacking up the car with the stock jack wasted a lot of time. Just need a drill, vise, and coping saw to get the rear bushing out. Worth it though.

Your toe is probably off but I agree with Lenko espically since the left side axle is much shorter.

Also be sure everything is torqued down properly.

Well I found the problem. And brutus you were half right. The toe cannot be changed during the control arm install (unless you remove the tie rod ends and loosen up the nut and rotate the rod).

Thought I torqued everything down to spec, so I take it apart (lower mount) and the front control arm bolt is loose!

No more weird movement.

I should check my control arm bolt torques again too... after tightening them with the car lifted, I read the book later and it says you're supposed to torque them with the weight of the car on the wheels or the bushings will get damaged. I don't see how they can be torqued with the car on the ground though... especially since you need the lower engine mount and the left subframe-radiator support bracket removed to even have access to the front bolts.

Comments please... I've been having nightmares about this

You can do it on ramps. That's how I did mine. And you can remove both those peices you mentioned with out any thing falling apart.

Woah same thing as my '99 Z!

My car is lowered with Sportline spring and I have Koni Red's installed too.

I took the car for an alignment and everything checked out fine the tech said.

Maybe I better check those bolts and make sure everything is torqued good as we only torqued the bolts with the car on axle stands and not on the ground...

torque the bolts on the ground. And glad my stupidity could help.

YES!

This is very important, unfortunately I only learned this after my cav. was introduced to the side of a mountain...

My passenger side control arm bolt was backed out all the way to the lower mount, and my driver side was loose. This causes funky steeringwheel feedback, and the wheels tend to wander. The best way I can describe the feeling if you imagine your wheels on train tracks, and whatever side is loose, that wheel jumping over on a farther track and then coming back in.

This only cost me my front ground effect, scrapped up front bumper, scraped up sideskirts, 1 broken rim, 1 jacked up rim, 1 headlight mounts, and a boulder flying up and landing on my c/f spoiler.

...at least my car handles better now, and I have to get new rims!

Check your bolts, especially after the bushing install!!!

Anyone have a LS Sport bumper, blue?

All this talk is making me nervous... I don't have any symptoms but I did my bushings last weekend. I was gonna wait till I got back home next week to re-torque them, but now I think I'll find a shop out here to put it on ramps before I make the 300+ miles trip home.
