Betcha it's the front strut mounts on my 02 cavy with about 20000 on it they went bad Dad works at a dealership helped him pull them and do other stuff but anyways there made of plastic and mine were destroyed I had a popping noise when I took off hard and grabbed second turning into my driveway and when I hit bumps. I believe there is a bulletin on it from GM at the dealership...

There is a service bullitin for this popping. It could be your Intermediate steering shaft. The number on this is #04-02-35-004C. It is for all cavies 1997-2004 and Fires 1997-2004. Hope this helps

Hmm 97-04? I've got the same problem and I have a 95, unless it was mysteriously redesigned in 97?

My car is doing the same thing i think that it is either my strut, or my cv axle

mine is doing the same. is that a recall that the dealership will fix even if it started happening once the car got lowered?

can you change the strut mount w/out a spring compressor. i want to do a driveway install because the dealership is quoting about 700CAN for the job

you can, but if you are new, i really wouldnt advise it.... rent one from a local auto parts store... at times theres over 100pounds of force on springs, hence the need for compressor.

better than risking a broken limb or finger right? aftermarket springs dont really need this as they are shorter....

I believe because GM is looking for ways to make a cheaper product hence not fully knowing more assuming they probably didn't make them out of cheap plastic. Talked to my friend tonight his 2005 Cavalier is doing the same thing he also works at the dealership said its the strut mounts. Cheaper is always good... On the other note I don't recall having to use a spring compressor when my father and I did mine it only took like 20 min if that too...

We have become part of something much more complicated than you or I will ever fully comprehend. We build more than just trucks. . . we build friendships, we build futures, we build our dreams. We drive our trucks low and hold our heads high because we have an unwritten and unspoken agreement that we will live life to the fullest and never fall fall victim to 'the norm'. Others laugh at us when we spend hours on end working on our trucks, yet shake our hands when we are done.
