Sub frame connectors?
Tuesday, June 14, 2005 7:54 PM
Ok heres the question. Can we put subframe connectors on our j-bodies? My buddy has them on his 93 mustang, and this popped into my head durring my welding class earlier today. If it has been done have they all been custom made, because i searched really fast on the org and the internet and i got lots on sub frame braces not connectors. Does any part manufacturer make the connectors for the J's?

If anyone has any info on this it would be greatly appreciated. I'm curently building the foundation for my cav ( suspension ) and i auto cross on week ends so this would help in the handling department. I just want to finish my suspension before i tear into the motor.........

Elaborate on what you mean by a subframe connector.

Well from what i understand Subframe connectors tie the front and rear subframes together making a more ridgid chassis. This improves the handling charateristics of the vehical. They usually are welded in or bolted in place.

Well, I think the ones that have an X design would definitely be more functional than the ones that do not tie the left and right side together too. I could be wrong about this, but I think that RWD cars put more forces on the middle of the chassis than a FWD and in that case stiffening both sides without tying them together would still make sense.

We don't really have a rear subframe so I think the best option, if your going to build one for our cars, would look something like this: http://www.totalcontrolproducts.com/SF12_installed.html

^^^ Beautiful Pushrods, you can hit up Ken2.2 on here, he sells front sub-frame braces. Get yourself one of them and build your own subframe connector. He gives mounting instructions w/ it, but you'll need to know how to weld aluminum b/c that's what he uses for the brace. IMO our cars really don't need a full subframe since they're FWD, so the brace alone should be plenty. I had one on my car b4 I dropped the car, then the day after I dropped it, I hit a big bump and bent the h311 outta the bar so it did me no good, heh. Every1 else is talking great about it tho.

just keep note if you are gonna run braces, keep your car decently NOT slammed.

if you can get to a chassis shop, have them do some tests on what areas flex the most and brace those.

in racing, lighter is better, so technically if a brace isnt really needed or does very little for an application, its usually ommited or designed into the chassis to make it as low profile and light as possible.

rwd cars put more torque/twist on the chassis due to the driveshaft and initial and kinetic movement of the driveshaft.

fwd cars on the other hand dont have nearly as much torsional forces on the chassis.

you can always overdo the easy

I had sent him an email asking on the price. and yes i do plan on getting one eventually when i head out to bolingbrook to meet up with some old friends. I am currently attending school for welding and i hope to eventually get to the point where i am fabing parts for my cars and friends.

Good idea about the chassis shop for flex testing that never crossed my mind ill have to take a walk through the yellow pages for shops in my area. Thanks for the input guys

Pushrods- you can make your own subframe brace fairly easily.

Here's the instructions(right click and save as): subframe brace

Then just order a 3 foot piece of this: A36 Rectanglular Steel Tubing

By the time you pay for shipping and buy some bolts you will probably be out $20. I really wouldn't reccomend that you use aluminum for a subframe brace.

wow that's great. why spend 75 plus shipping 4 the rksport "subframe brace" when that looks just as good and is probably better at bracing!
I am always down for a little elbow grease and work over paying the big bucks.

wait a second, On a 2.2liter . Isn't that right about where the pacesetter header would be? does anyone have one of these with a pacesettered 2.2? does it work?

I have an OBX header(exact copy of pacesetter's only its made of stainless) on my 2.2 and my subframe brace clears it.

Something like this?....... not sure if it will clear the 2.2/2200 exhaust though..... It does sit up into the sub-frame, so you have less of a chance of hitting anything with your car lowered.....

only part that sucks about that.... on manuals, theres no tranny pan. so the autos are left out.

actually I got the metal yesterday and to cut it to length (31" from thirty six ), and notch the ends for the bolt holes {like in pushrods link: "subframe brace" }, I was out there hacksawing forever!!! Anyways it is done. When I had my car up in the air thought I thought the bar was to be mounted more nearer the lower "A Arms" as opposed to that far back ( looks like almost near the firewall)... I was going to put my cav up in the air again, and notch the bar a few inches where it was going to hit my pace setter header, then drill some holes in my car, then spray paint, then install. Thanks

I think we test fit it on an auto, and it cleared....... but its been awhile, so I can't remember for sure...... so I could be wrong.

I think I have 2 left in my shop, if I can find an auto around here, I'll test it out.

could be an interesting find for high rev... i mean they market it as manuals only...so if it does fit autos....

You could probably get that brace to clear with some spacers. I know my control fx bar would not clear the 4 sp's pan if you flipped it up. Something that is only about 1/2" thick would probably fit without a spacer though.

I have the 2200 /auto, with a pacesetter header .. i also have a a sub frame brace in my garage when I get home from work I will try to install it and take some pics
