How to know when ball joint is failing?
Friday, June 17, 2005 6:34 AM
I have a clunking sound when I'm turning left or right. When the car is going straight I don't get any noise, just when I'm turning. It seems to be coming from the left front. The thing is I recently installed KYB AGX and Eibach pro-kit. Now when I was putting the left front together I pinched the ball joint a little and some of the grease came out. So I figure I ruined the ball joint. I used new 95-99 style mounts in the front and installed my poly control arm bushings also at the same time. Basically I'm just wondering what the signs are when the ball joints fail? This is the only thing I can think of since most everything else is new. The ball joints are OE with 48,000 miles on the car. Thanks for any help.

Sounds like a ball joint or possibly the half-shaft. Try braking while going round the corner, if you feel pulsing it's most likely the ball joint. Those things are easy to change (after you've done one) and fairly cheep. If you drive your car hard they tend to fail, especially if you didn't replace the grease you squeezed out.

If it's moderately bad (or worse), a very quick and easy way to tell is to jack the car up. Grab the tire (by the sides) and try to move it around. It should move very little (r&p usually at a tiny bit of slop). And there should be absolutely zero movement at the ball joint. Any lateral movement at all and it's bad.
