over speed bumps and rough roads CREAKY noise
Friday, July 01, 2005 7:04 AM
I can hear a creaky noise coming form the right front strut area whe going over speed bumps or drivingon rough roads.

Last OCT the mounts and struts were replaces on all 4 corners of the car.

Is the creak worn out mounts or struts?

Check your front swaybar bushings.

I didn't think that my base cavalier has a front sway bar

I'm getting the same thing on my 04, but I think it is the urethane sway bar bushings I put on. I may take them off and lube them and see if that helps. It could be the control arm bushings on yours though.

you could try lithium grease. just use whatever you put in your ball joint boot.

ryan there used to be a re-call for the squeeking sway bar and you will never guess what g.m. came up with to quiet it down. they actualy told the techs to take a anti-freeze jug cut the plastic jug making two strips. and are you ready for this to put the strips in between the sway bar bushing and the sway bar! yup you read that right put a piece
of an old anti-freeze jug in there to quiet it down. i know that sounds about as ghetto
as you can possibly get but thats what the enginerees at g.m. came up with. ask any
mechanic that works for chevy and if they were there back in the 90s then they did this

the only problem with lithium greese in a place like that is its not gonna last very long
you could check out rk sport they sell a swaybar mount that has greese fittings in it.
the biggest problem with the swaybar in our car is its location. i just replaced mith with
one from eibach and did the poly bushings from rk and the only way to get to the bar is to drop the frame down about 2 inches. to do this you need to disconect the sterring colum from the rack first. do not forget about to do this or you will be hateing life!!
the whole job took an hour to do so no biggie. oh and your gonna need blue lock tight
for the steering bolt as well as the 6 frame bolts you need to remove. btw dont tighten the frame bolts till you get them all started. hope this helped and good luck.

its the brackets behind the engine that holds the sway bar does the squeaking. I changed mine when my car was lowered. They were coming out of there position. Changed on warranty. now the problem is solved.

That antifreeze jug thing is very ghetto. Go get some Teflon tape (hardware store in the plumbing section), and wrap that around anywhere the urethane bushings touch metal. A touch of white grease (lithium grease) will help the Teflon tape stick (the "tape" isn't sticky)

i said it was ghetto. but that IS what the dealer used to do. and teflon tape tears when you use it on fittings how long does it last on front end bushings?

rk's bushings have greese fittings they're your best bet.

something that needs to be realized is that the lithium grease will attract all the dirt that road can kick up. I had to replace bushings that were cracked up front where they were greased. the rear looks almost new in comparison. I don't know for sure that the grease cause the poly to crack but the bushing was split all the way through from the middle to the outside edge. if I can find a picture I will post it up.
