Weird vibration in the frontend.....please, help..
Sunday, July 24, 2005 10:55 AM
The roads around here are horrible, and I managed to hit a nice rut in the pavement where they did a half-ass job repairing it after running a gas line.

Instantly after hitting the rut I heard a ticking sound and felt a driveline vibration of sorts!? WTF! I go home, remove the wheels, look at EVERYTHING, yank on things, make sure things are tight, replace bad tie rod boot, etc. I even drove the car up on stands to try and reproduce it. Nothing.

Here's what I've noticed-

-while in 2nd decelerating you hear a clicking from 25-20mph, this is how it began! Only when in gear is it noticeable though, when coasting in neutral/clutch in I get nothing!
-while driving/coasting in 2nd/3rd around 20-30mph there is a noticeable vibration, seems in sync with the wheels, so within the driveline/suspension somewhere
-noise while cruising at 55mph, ditititititititit, almosts sound exhaust like, but it's not.....

Anything else I simply don't notice, or can't hear over other things. I have raised the car back up and put stock wheels on and it became even more apparent. CV joints were a big thought, but I'm clueless.

Come on, I'm to the point of taking it to a dealership!

sounds like a cv axle related problem

It may be the axle or wheel bearing??

Sorry Im not much of help but it may be one of them.

Good luck!

Paying $26 tomorrow to see what dealer thinks!

just don't let them do the work, it'll prolly be expensive. i replaced an axle on one of my cars and ti prolly took less than 2 hours. only cost about $80 too. i would definitely do it on your own if it ain't nothin too hard

Exactly, I'm just letting the dude drive my car and inspect it.

I'd say 80% chance it's a hub/bearing assembly.
10% chance it's a CV joint.
10% chance it's in the transmission (the final drive most likely).

How much does the hub/bearing assembly run? I assume I would buy a new wheel bearing and be done? $90?

not that cheap hoss, unless you come see me. If you need a
hub/bearing assembly, let me know. Don't put some cheap crap
Autozone hub on it. I can do an ACDelco for you for $93.01 plus tax.
The ACDelco part number is 20-25K. I might even be able to do it
cheaper if we speak privately.

I'll let you know, no way would I put cheap @!#$ on it, AC Delco only.

Dealership drove it, the tech laughed when he got it out, and asked me "which noise are you complaining about?" Basically he said all of my suspension mods suck, make noise, and that no one but me can tell what I'm trying to describe.

Sadly enough, he's right .

What an a$$. And that's why I fix my own shiat. People like that who say
things like that really make a bad name for their Dealership. I would call
the Service Manager if I were you on that note.

My cav does the exact same thing, sounds like the downpipe is rattling against something (it's not though). it sounds like a loud exhaust noise w/ alot of bass lol.
I would love to know what's wrong w/ your car though

Yeah he is a dick at times, but he meant no real harm. I'd fix it myself too, but I need some help determining what it is first! Hell until it breaks now, I no longer care.
