Brakes are horrible
Wednesday, July 27, 2005 4:32 PM
Is it just my car (2005 Cavalier) that can't stop in the rain or is this a common problem for the j-bodys? I've never owned a car that had such horrible brakes in the rain. Scared me the first time I was out in the rain with it. If it is just my car, then I should get it to the dealer asap before I rear end someone. Thanks.

way to be general about it. it could be bad brakes or worn tires. maybe slow down in the rain and start braking a little more early.

I know what you mean. Unfortunate answer is yes, the brakes on our cars suck . I the first time I had to panic stop in the rain I thought my heart was gonna stop. After putting up with this for about a year I found out PepBoys carries EBC brakes in stock for our cars so I bought them and they are great. Pick up a set of EBC pads and rotors for your car it is a night and day difference. And yes they're great in the rain too.

I know it's not worn brakes or bad tires, cars brand new. That bites though. The car has 4k miles on it, I don't really want to buy all new brake parts when I'll just be throwing away barely used parts. What did the EBC parts run?

Guess I might just suck it up and go with it. It's ridiculous how bad they are in the rain. This is my 4th car with disc/drum set up(6th car over all) and none of them braked that bad in the rain. Has anyone done the stainless steel brake lines as well? How easy were those to install. Brake pads and rotors I've replaced before, but not brake lines. Thanks for all the input.

Gravana is having a group buy for rotors, pads and lines. Should I suck it up and get that set up? The pads are not the EBC's, they are Hawk. This is the link

JBO gp Gravana

Thanks for the help. I think after this set up, I might buy better tires too. Depends on how much of an improvement the brakes give me over stock.

i did lines pads rotors and fluid. it is not that hard to do. i love my brakes/ today at our Autox when i parked the car after fun runs the brakes were smoking and they still had good bite. i say if your rotors are fine just slap some performance friction z-rated pads with lines on the stock rotors. the slotted rotors don't help that much. it is the pads that give you the bite!

For $200 you can go to NOPI's website and order:

Brembo Rotors (26 a piece) $52
Axxis Metal Master Pads (a goodd street pad that is low on dust) $29 - upgrade to the Axxis Ultimates if lots of brake dust doesn't bother you
Goodridge SS Brake Line kit - $102

Thats a total of $183, costing you about 200 shipped.

I use that setup for autocrossing and it works great. I'm on the ultimate pads, but you will probably want the metal master's since the ultimates dust REALLY bad. I have heard some so so stuff about EBC's pads, so I would stay away from them.

If you do get that stuff, switch your fluid over to Valvoline Syntec. Its about $5 a bottle and one is all you will need. It has the highest boiling point for the least amount of money(its just a step below Motul, ATE super blue, or something like that).

Zach just curious what have you heard about EBC brakes? I love mine, I can hammer them all day and they come back for more but if you know of any problems with them I would really like to know before I have the problem.

Thanks

A few local autcrossers I know have mentioned that they were just not impressed with them. I did a quick google search so that you don't have to take my word for it. Read this and this.

Performance braking is great, but my real concern is braking in the rain. There is a nice storm brewing tonight and I was out driving and when I got on the brakes it feels like they are not going to stop me. I'll worry about performance braking at a later date, right now I just want to stop better than I do when it rains. I'm seriously considering tires too because I think the stock Goodyears are garbage. Thanks again.

Yeah, those goodyears are terrible. I ran those for about 20,000 miles and hated every one. If you want a tire reccomendation, I like these.

I'm on the Falken Ziex 512's right now and they provide pleany of grip wet or dry. They have a rim protector too for those people that like to rub the sides of curbs. The only sort of downside you might find with them is that they have a fairly stiff sidewall and don't absorb bumps as well as the goodyears. The stiff sidewall does make the car turn in and corner much better though since it doesn't roll over as easily.

If you only have a few thousand miles on the goodyears they really shouldn't be giving you any problems in the rain. What kind of car and tires were you driving before?

On my Grand Am GT I had Yokohama AS430's. I guess Townfair tire sells them only. They were great on that car. That was the only car I've bought tires for. I have a habit of going through cars just because I can. The Cavalier I have to keep for a few years though. Wet or dry those Yokohamas were really nice for all seasons. If you check out my cardomain site, I have a poll running for new tires.(you can find the link in my JBO profile) Check it out and tell me what you think. Thanks.

I'll review each tire for you (based on reviews and what I have heard):
1. Kumho 712's
Terrible grip, but good tire life. Good tire for someone on a budget who doesn't enjoy taking corners with speed or buying new tires.

2. Fuzion ZRi
Mixed reviews on these. A lot of people complain about them not lasting very long but giving good grip. Not my personal choice.

3. Toyo Proxies 4
I've heard nothing but good things on these.

4. g-force Sport
Again, nothing but good stories on these.

I would probably get the least expensive of either the toyo's or the bfg's.

Let me throw this out there. If I upgraded my pads and tires, it should make a night and day difference. Anybody but Zach have any input on the Axxis Metal Master pads? Those have a great price and if they will make a difference in the rain, I'm all over that. Shipped to my house I can get the BF Goodrich g-Force Sports for $304.00 from tires.com. I'm also going to check and see if my local tire shop would be willing to match the online price. Thanks again.

Here's a few comments on the metal masters I found:
1
2 - Scroll all the way down, the tops ones are on the Ultimate pads

Thanks Zach never was questioned your knowledge you seem to know what you are talking about. Yes if I ever decided to actualy race my car other then just playing around with it I would go Brembo or Bear. But since this is a street car its kinda over kill, I can't justify that much cash going to my brakes without my wife trying to kill me while I sleep.
So I'll just be stuck with EBC's and the like, for daily driveing they're not too bad at all.
Def step up from factory stuff. As for tires I've always had great luck with BF Goodrich's
tires good grip wet or dry, quiet ride no roaring at all, and they where realy well.
I haven't tried the others you spoke of other then the Kumho 712's, they're fine but when it snows your screwed other then that i liked them. But the BFG's are good all around or weather.

As far as pads go, the Axxis Metal Masters from NOPI sound good to me. I'll prob order those after my next pay check. I'll upgrade my rotors when they wear out and at the same time will probably get the stainless steel lines too. My next concern then is new tires. Friend of mine has some Falken St115's on order for his '02 Sentra SE-R. I'll wait and see what he has to say about them and I'm sure he'll let me drive it and see what I think of them. Damn there are a lot of choices for tires! I didn't say before, but I do have dedicated winter tires, so all-seasons are not necessary.
