My 98 coupe has a humming after it warms up in the front end, so I checked the wheel bearings. The passenger front had play in it, so I replaced it last night. Some of the humming when away, like a very low vibration after the car has been driven for a few minutes.
I noticed the humming completely goes away whe I turn the wheel to the left slightly while driving, but when its turned right it still does it. I think it got better after replacing the bearing though. Im going out to rotate the tires and see if that makes a difference,
Could it be anything else? Maybe I should replace the other bearing (although there isn't any play in it, the car has 160,000 and I dont know the last time it was replaced.
Suggestions? Thanks
If your turning to the left and it's still making the noise, I'd say the new bearing could be faulty. Instead of replacing the LH front bearing with a new one, hoping to solve the noise. ..just swap over both front bearings. I know it'll take time, but if you have the air tools it'll be done in under an hour. By doing so you can definitly say which bearing is faulty
Thats a good idea, I rotated the tires and its still doing it. I know the passengers side bearing was bad though from the play it had in it. But at least I could find out if the new one is bad.
Could alignment maybe cause the tire to make that vibration if it was riding on the outside heel?
Haven't seen an alignment cause vibrations yet. Only way I'd see an alingment cause vibrations is if the tire was riding on the outter part and was feathered or something..due to an alignment needed. But even then the natural fault in that case isn't the alignment causing the vibrations..it's the feathered tire.Best thing first I'd do for the vibrations is to get all 4 wheels balanced. Usually proper servicing on tire balancing is every 10,000km's..Think thats like 6,000miles, which works out to every second oil change.
I replaced the driver side bearing and it now rides as smooth as glass. Its ironic because the passenger side bearing is the one that was obviously bad, because of the play in it. But the driverside was causing the vibe. I guess when your cavy hits 160,000 miles, its time to replace the wheel bearings
