Horrible Shuttering
Monday, August 22, 2005 5:35 AM
I just noticed this about a week ago but its really annyoing now and i need to figure out what it is. i got my integra on the road now so i dont drive the cav much anymore. anyway it only happens in 3rd and 4th gear. like around 3-4k in 3rd gear and 1.5-3k in 4th gear. if im driving normally when i get to about 3k in 3rd it starts to shake and shutter pretty bad. same thing when i shift and go into 4th. only does it when im on the gas and if im driving normally. if i drive more aggressive then it doesnt do it nearly as bad and is hardly noticible. anyone have any ideas?

Best Guess: Blown Head Gasket

Compression test would be the most accurate. But you'd need a baseline to compare it to.

How's the engine idle, especially if you let it just sit for a minute or two right after you start it. Watch the engine, see if it starts rocking forward and backward.

Both the 2.2 and 2.3/2.4 are notorious for blowing head gaskets every 60 to 80 Kmi.

Could also be a clutch, wheel bearings, cloud be internal to the tranny (but I kinda doubt it). Does it seem to come from one side or the other? How about 5th gear, if you slow down to the same speed as when it does it in 3 or 4th... does it do it then too?

it runs fine. it idles where it should and there really isnt any difference in performace, its just when im in high 3rd and low 4th gear. as for the 5th gear thing, i'll get back to on that, im leaving work now and when i get home i'll take it out for a quick drive. i really think it has something to do w/ the suspension. i thought it was the wheel bearings at first, that was the first thing that came to mind

I was thinking suspension right away too, but you didn't mention any weird sounds (almost all suspension problems make sounds). And usually if it's suspension it will seems to come from one side or the other.

I don't know about the internals of the manual trannys, but maybe 3 and 4 share some common part that's worn/broke and that's why it's only those two gears.

well i drove it today and im pretty sure now it is tjhe suspension. its amazing what you hear when you put your head out the window and have the radio off. anyway everytime i got on and off the gas i could heard like a clicking noise. also if the wheel is straight i hear the same noise and it slows down as i slow down. its coming from the front drivers side and it sounds like its behind the wheel somewhere, like behind the rotor and all. i thought at first it was a motor mount since i could hear it when i got on and off the gas but then when i heard the clicking just coasting down my street, im figuring on something else.

Hey i have a 97 sunfire that had that exact same problem and 2 days before i was scheduled to get it fixed my left front wheel came off while driving. I was told that it was a combination of bad outer tie rod ends and wheel bearings. I dont wanna scare you but be careful. The last thing you want is a wheel falling off at 75mph. (Trust Me!!!)

yea im leaning more towards the wheel bearing. i have no money at all right now to fix anythin' so it has to sit

Is it a clicking sound or knocking sound?

Things to check would be to make sure all your lugs are tight....may sound stupid but it does happen.

If you can get your car jacked up and get underneth it.Grab a hold of your axel and push it up and down (towards the sky and down towards the ground), You shouldn't have any play. If you do try and see which end it moves more at (inner cv joint or outter cv).

I replaced my wheel bearing the first time thinking that was making the clicking but it ended up being my cv joints on my axel.

Clicking would indicate a CV joint to me. Try what NuSTYLE said.
