What holds the rotor on?

I was changing my break pads and when i got to the driver side i took off the caliper and my rotor slid right off the wheel studs. This didnt happen on my passenger side and it definitely didnt seem right to me. Should something be holding it on? or is it just the caliper

The problem was on your passenger side (probably corroded). The only thing that really holds the rotor on is the wheel.

yeah just put a little bit of brake grease on the wheel hub before you put back together to keep it from happening next time.

Well when the caliper is attached the rotor should not be able to slide off.... But the wheel is the only thing that holds it tight.
