I went and looked at an 06 SS1 4 door cobalt today once again, 4 door was all they had on the lot. I poked around under the rear axle and the axle "looks" to be just like whats under the cavalier. Just like it. If any of you guys ever gets time to go to a local Chevy dealer and look at what i am talking about please reply with some info on this. A rear disc convertion could be that much closer to being much easier. Thanks guys.
It's been brought up before. It will not work. A LOT of cutting/welding is required...
how it that? it no more work than the neon swap
I looked into it as soon as part numbers became avaible for the cobalts rear discs came out and there different numbers. Not to mention that the bolt patern is supposed to be different and that would mean you'd have rims for just the front and different ones for the rear. Just not fesable.

No the regular Cobalt is a 4 lug and the SS is a 5 but from what i've seen there are a unique bolt pattern. Supposedly the aftermarket wheels dont fit a Cobalt SS. They are deffinently 5 but I'm not sure the pattern I think its like 5x112 or something like that.

Yeah. Normal are a 4 lug bolt pattern, SS=5x112. The axles are quite differentt, yes they are both torsion axles, that's where the similarity stops.
Even the hub bolt pattern is different. The axles are different widths and other dimensions are different. It would be like getting a round peg in the square hole.
The Neon and N-Body swaps are much easier than the Cobalt.
Actually, the SS' s have a 5x110mm bolt pattern. This is the same pattern as Saab's have had for a while.
The bolt pattern is rare, but there are definitely some wheel manufacturer's that carry them. I bought a set with this bolt pattern a couple of years ago for my wifes Saturn LS.

Damn I was off by 2mm!
Oh well I as least had the odd part right.

It would still be
way too much work for what it's worth. And your front and rear bolt patterns would be different. Spare tire anyone??
110, damn... 112 sounded so familiar... Oh well, it happens.
CTS your right i guess, I just looked at an SS and saw what looked to be the same axle.
the cobalt rear axle is very similar to the 1st and 2nd gen , in the fact the have shocks , and coil springs that are seperate
where the 3rd gen use strut style
what if you just replace the axle, with everything else

He said similar, not the same. The axle will not fit without modification. Then the wheels will not fit without relocating the hubs. Which may be a good thing, then you could use 5x100 hubs. But then the Cobalt rotors wouldn't work, and you'd have to find replacements.... Does this sound like a lot of work to anyone else?? Who knows if the e-brake assembly connects the same. Darn springs and shocks are in the wrong place, or wait, we use struts, well that will have to be converted over, break out the welder. How's the spacing on all that so far? Wheel track is off by 2 inches, where's that welder again. How about that caster angle, ahhh, not important anyway.
Point is, it's been looked into. If you want to do it, there's no reason it's can't be done. It's just more work than it's really worth just to get a torsion axle with disc brakes.
