Any idea??? I'm going to buy the Y pipe to get dual exhaust on my SL, but i'm confused why the stock GT mufflers are 2 different sizes..
I realize they have a dual exhaust
Thats why i'm asking. Because i'm going to get a stock GT Y-pipe and put it on my SL to add dual exhaust.
But why are the stock GT mufflers different sizes?
Here's a pic I borrowed from Wild Weasel's site of the mufflers
i think it's because there's a lot less flow going to the passeger muffler
yes, its becasue there really isnt much air-flow through the passenger one, its more for looks. my friedns gt doesnt even have smoke come out of it during the winter, you'd be better off paying to have a cat-back done with a y pipe and two muffler that are the same
you could also just skip that muffler, i think thats what the ws6 trans ams did.
Trans Ams have on crossmounted muffler with two outlets.
I dunno about where you live... but where I'm from we abbreviate it and just call it "GM"

Noise doesnt add horsepower. Horsepower adds noise.

Ain't that the truth.
As what is said above. J-body's realy have no need for dual exhaust. It's for looks...
I think it's a fitment issue.... you'd have a tough time fitting two stock size mufflers under it...

Do you mean. The little ones? Or "two of the big ones"?

so people would ask why does a sunfire gt have two different size mufflers
Yeah I looked at them one time when I put a hitch on a customer's GT and I thought it looked more like a Fitment Issue but it could also be flow IDK?
I cast my vote for alot less flow going to the smaller muffler on the passenger side.
I say it's both

I ain't callin u a gold digga,but you ain't messin wit a broke cracka
ok here's the thing.. they flow through both... but when you "giver" it flows more out of the bigger one due to size and flow location. I plan on putting on the MagnaFlow camero style on my GT. I hope that it comes out more evenly.
also you will notice from the pic supplied earlier that the pipe to the passenger side muff is smaller. If it was bigger you would get more flow into that one (in theory) But then again the inlet in the passenger side muff is small too. so i guess there goes that theory
I agree with the its all for looks.... but you have to admit, it does look pretty cool
I got aftermarket duals on my 96 SF GT & they are the same size now. &
the flow seems equally distributed also.

I like my exhaust tips better. But it's mostly because if you look the exhaust pipe goes pretty much straight into the larger muffler but has a smaller pipe that runs off the side to the smaller muffler. Doesn't get much flow through it so doesn't need a big muffler. Probably some fitment issues there too but in my car it seems that most of the exhaust gasses come out the larger muffler. Like many people have said before, the dual exhaust is for looks. My step-sis has a 1999 Cavlier Z24 conv and only has one exhaust.
Here is a pic of my dual exhaust fitted with apexi mufflers.

You need them both it is a back pressure issue. and fit. if you go true duel exahust then you must use the two small ons with no cross overs or y conectors just a true duel. dont forget the catly-vert. that is need for the back presure as far as clean air to hell with that issue....it will be cleaner with true duel.

Hu? How would you go true duel on a 4 cylinder?
Back pressure... let's not go there.
