have no idea how this happend, people tell me its from sun exposure.....the only thing i could think of is, when i blast music in my car, this part of the dash vibrate A LOT from the bass. it was smaller in the summer time, but now it really opened up
Which piece is that? If thats right by the dash I dont have a piece like that in mine. And I dont think it should crack like that even with bass.

Yep same here, mine just cracked right down the middle one day for no apparent reason, other than extreme cheapness lol.
I've just learned to ignore it; as was mentioned, it happens to almost every Cavalier on the site at one time or another. You also can't just change out the cracked piece for a new one, its actually attached the the whole back part of the dash, which means dissassembling the whole dashboard just to get to it. Its really not worth it, on the Sunfires its one simple piece that can be changed out pretty easily

Yeap, happens to alot of Cavaliers. My step-sis had it happen to her car. Sunfires don't seem to suffer from it though....

Mine did it after 7yrs.....
Sunfire don't suffer from it cause that peice is a seperate panel. In the Cavaliers it the top of the entire dash assembly.... It's dure to stress caused in conjunction with the flex of the body and the screws under the Defrost vent being too tight... If you don't take care of it now it will crack the dash in have. I found this out when I took my dash apart... It cracked from there all the way down through my glove box...

i have two cracks split the part into thirds it sucks
went to fix it and gave up because of the emense work involve i am just going to fiberglass it when i get to eh dash of the car.
now just curious do you guys get cracks because some bolts are loose, or the roads near you that bad

My dash cracked in that same spot in my 97'. Luckily my 98' is in perfect condition and that hasn't happened to it...yet.

Yeah both of my cavys cracked. I just called GM and bitched and they fixed it for free.
Gm over tightens the dash from the factory, Mine has the crack too. The car flexs under hard steering, or hitting pot holes, or speed bumps to fast. Its normal.
Mine did it also I notice that it really getting moving when i get some wheel hope from hard acceleration and looked into replacing it but you need the whole backside of the dash to do it! another reason sunfires are better, they dont have that problem!

yep my 97 did that but thankfully my 02 hasnt yet... its a cavalier thing... thanks to gm for there cheap design....
mine has it too it craked got it fixed the next winter it craked again
i noticed one thing aldoh
dash was noisy squeeking till it craked some sunfires do it but very rarely will they crack
plastic dosnt flex as much mine craked the upcoming winter after i had it fixed and the first timeit craked was winter too

How it happened could be Too much Sunlight exposure,Too Dried out,Etc. But yeah it does happen My wife's Cavy has a couple small ones too.
my blue cav with almost 100k miles on it has no cracks, but the silver cav with like 50k miles finally got one about a month ago..
i do have an extended warrenty do you think they will fix it?
