It came out in 02 it was a transition year some had the 2.2 OHV some ahd the 2.4 and some had the ecotec

half way through the 2002's, they switched over from the Z24 to LS Sport, and with that switch, they started using the ecotec for LS Sport.

and in Canada we still got the Z24 from 02-05 , these years had 2.2 ECOTEC except for half of 02.

you could have a 02 coupe with the sport package, and not have and eco.
there wheels wernt quite as nice, and they had black mirrors.
(i was at the philly races with a buddy, we were in his 92 Civic. We lined up with a Cavalier. He knew mine smoked his so he was leary about the race, When i saw it wasnt a Z24 and had black mirrors, i told him to go for it
all 03+ have the eco.
another weird thing, my 02 eco has the vin of a Z24. who knows.

You could also get the Eco's in base model 02's as well, you just has to order it that way, Like I did!

By October or November of 2001 (2002 model year) the Ecotec replaced the TC.
Trust me I searched endlessly for the TC for the Sunfire GT and luckly I found one.
