I had a 2000 Z24 (2.4L) M5.
Wife has a 2002 Sunfire GT (2.4L)
Im lookin for a CHEAP but good performing fairly new J. 2002-2004
so....
Opinion go older 2.4L GT or Z
OR
2002 2 door base model cav w/Ecotech? to save $ but still decent performance....
I really like the 2.4 but am open to anything. I DO NOT want a 2.2L non eco.
Thanks

Not because I have an ecotec but I would get the ECOTEC because it's much more supported aftermarket wise and by GM than the 2.4 motors.

Stock, high 15s are possible with a decent driver.
MPG differences are very similar, probably the same.
Good luck with the base model...just remember that you won't have ABS

03-05 Base cars have improved suspension (FE1) and larger rear brake drums as well as the Eco.
If you look in the Racing Forum you will see that a base J with intake and exhaust will turn 15.6's down to the low 15's on the right track with a good driver.
ABS, and alot of the other options are a hassle down the road. KISS.

Might be a hassle years from after you purchase the car but it will save your life or keep you from an accident. I've seen what not having ABS does on a Cavalier in person...ended up smoking all tires like crazy and made them immediately bald because he had to slam on his brakes at a higher rate of speed.
Just my opinion though...

you mentioned possibly a 2002 base with ecotec. If im not mistaken, ecotec was introduced first to the cavys in 2002 but ony in the ls sport/z24 models. I have a 2002 LS and it only has the 2.2 OHV. 2003+ all models have the eco.
I think ABS is still an option on anything but the 1SV?
I'm sure ABS is great, however people have been driving cars for years without it. And brakes can be modulated to prevent lockup.
who gives a poop about ABS, a decent driver who has the feel of a car can deal without
i think thats more for soccer mom who doesnt kno what a tire is
anyway back on topic.....id say get the ecotec, although i LOVE the 2.4's low end grunt, but i just think the ecotec is gonna be an all around better motor
