im driving a 99 sunfire 2.2 auto 3spd and im getting like barely 200miles to a tank.
why is this happening? is there something i can do to fix this? its a brand new engine and i have a cone filter and cat back.
obviously you're running rich. Could be stuck injector, or the car thinks it's not warming up, and dumping more fuel in. Which would be a bad thermostat I believe, someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
well someone told me it could be the throttle position sensor that went bad. could that be it or do i have a 02 sensor out or something easy? please help i cant afford the gas prices.
ehh, not sure on those two man, someone will be able to tell you though.
Yes, either one would hurt you MPG. Is you CEL on? If so, goto Auto Zone or Advanced Auto and get the codes read for free and work from there.
well i did today and there are no codes the check engine light is not even on
is that city and hwy or just city. i know for me with 90% of city driving i get like 220 per tank. but when i go on the hwy i do way better. around 300.
Hi and welcome to winter time. Cars mileage drops big time when the temp. does.
We've been over this bunches of times in the maintence forum but basicly when it gets cold engines need more fuel to run, now since our cars have no choke the only way it
can do that is to richen itself up. If there are NO codes and you don't see a gas leak or
smell one then your probly ok.

Jackalope is very right about that.......I'm a good example of how the cold effects the gas mileage. We had a few weeks of about zero degree outside and I was getting about 24-26 mpg and then it warmed up to around the 20's and 30's and it bumped it up to about 28mpg.. Plus using the defrost and warming the car up make it ever worse.

its the weather, just filled up yesterday and got a whopping 17mpg! Take or two before that when it was warmer was around the normal 22mpg, so definitly the weather, id also check tire pressure, thats said to hurt gas mileage too.
I am getting the same mileage, between 15 and 17mpg. However... it hasn't been above 30º here for a few weeks, and all my trips are <15 minutes, so the car runs on the choke (ie. very rich) all the way to school, home, to work, to my friend's house... basically all the time. But still, anything I should be checking?
Like Endor said tire presure but other then that your basicly right its not warming up so its feeding in lots of gas.
On a side note when I took off my 18's for the winter and put back the 15's my mileage dropped too.

my car gets around 525kms to a tank all city... and if i did the math rite that would be 325.5miles per tank.... which sounds pretty good, hopfully my car will still get 525 this summer... the 525 is average, i've had it sometimes only get 500kms a tank and sometimes almost as high as 550kms... but 525 is around the average...
i get 400+ miles to a tank
acetont/lacus upper cylinder lube. 2oz of each to a tank.
see ya!
City i get about 625-650k. Highway i get about 750 giv or take it's gone as high as 830 on the highway. And city/highway it's anywhere from 600 to 700+. I filled up today it was 647 c/h and I have 246 k on it. Ultra 94 or super is the key. But hey that's just my opinion.
lol what r u driving a lawn mower??? ^^^
i live in southern cali where its pretty much always warm i only get just over 200 in the city too per tank
I'm with the other guys here - cold weather really takes a toll on gas mileage.
My car in the summer averaged about 39mpg highway and ~30-32 mpg city. The best I got on the highway was 41mpg, and the worst was 37 (really windy). Not sure what that equates to in miles/tank, but it's what I was hoping for when I bought it. Mine has dropped 4-5mpg now that it's winter, which I think is normal, but it's still doing pretty well. Still alot better than my old explorer and quite a bit better than my old 5.0 mustang, which was what I wanted when I bought it.
The 50-50-90 rule: Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.
here ill tell u guys what i figured out why i was getting horrible gas mileage. ok if u look at the coil packs i just replaced mine when this started and if u have the spark plug wires right between the banks it will run now if u switch the wires on one bank it still runs fine. as long as u keep them on the same bank well i checked the book and put them on right and now it runs better and well it should now get better mpgs. sorry it was so obvious.
