I have a Sunfire With A 2.4 liter engine. It idles real rough, smooths out for about 3 seconds and then runs rough again. What could possibly cause this? It shakes the whole car when it idles. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Do you run fuel system cleaner with your gas every time you change the oil? It won't solve the problem completely but it's a start.

do you have any bosch parts on your car???

I run cleaner through every time. And no I don't have any Bosch parts.
When was the last time you had a full tune up?

The motor mounts may need to be replaced. My 94 was a nightmare... put it in drive and it shook like San Francisco, and the problem was the motor mounts. Apparently it was quite a common problem in the 2nd gens, and not a cheap repair. Good luck...

Possibly but it seems odd that it would shake on and off. Usually that happends with people who have aftermarket camshafts, it has a looping sound.

I had someone ask me if I put a cam into it and I hadn't yet. It's just weird, Maybe the full tune up might help. I haven't done that in quite some time.

Does this happen after start up...before the engine is warm and then goes away once at operating temperature?
No it runs fine in warm up, It gets worse as it warms up.
could be spark plugs and wires. it's a 2.4 so it could be that lovely head gasket going. does it do anything out of the exhaust any foul smell? how many miles have you changes the O2 sensors?

Well actually I was saying take it to a professional just incase a tune up is not the solution but if he doesn't know how to give himself a tune up, then yes...take it to a professional.

Take the IDI cover off and check for any cracks in the housing. If you have a crack in the housing it will make it do like you just said. It alows the spark to jump and ground out causing a piston not to fire. Thus making the car shake like crazy. Pretty soon you will not be able to even start the car and I bet if you give it gas it sputters like hell and you can smell it.
If that is the case just go down to any parts store and pick one up. They usually have them there. It is a common problem. And the most likely problem.
take it to a professional
What are they going to do?
I kind of did mine. Changed plugs 02 sensors, IAT, changed coil packs, ran fuel filter used some engine cleaner in my oil. cleaned fileter nad TB checked all fluids..

Why are people so ashamed to say someone should take their car to a professional? Evidentally, he doesn't know what the problem is...maybe he should take it to someone who can FIND the problem instead of sitting on a forum scratching his ass while we give guesses of what the problem might be. We can't give him a 100% answer, so maybe someone who can see and touch the car can give him an correct answer.
Also, if he doesn't know how to do all of that stuff nor has the time (like most people), maybe he should take it to a professional who will do it right and in a timely manner.
It's not so far fetched guys...it's kind of realistic and logical.

That is true. I also have a rough idle at start up. I need to take my car to a shop to have a proper look at. I just don't have the time and money right now. I was just wonder what else do they do for a check up. My car needs some help.

my stuff ran rough, found the timing slipped bent exaughst vavle......................sucky
I only had this problem after I had the timing chain replaced. Was hoping it didn't slip and bend anything. maybe I could have the same problem. pooey.
Sounds like a misfire. Happened in my dad's Jetta when one of the plug wires was arcing to the exhaust manifold. It would shudder when it idled.
If it started happening after you had the timing chain replaced, they messed up on the timing. Its probably off by one tooth. The same problem happened to me.My timing was off by one tooth and the car sounded like it had a cam in it.The car drove perfect, but it had a lopey idle.Bring it back to the person who changed the timing chain and have him time it properly.
