i got a 94 cavalier 2.2 Just got it yesterday cause my 95 blew up. anyhow the temp gauge stays around 1/4 most of the time but sometimes it will jump almot into the red "about 3/4 of the gauge" then right back down and sometimes i dont have heat. the overflow tank starts bubbling and gurgling the second i start the car. it's 18 degrees out tonight so i know the antifreeze isnt hot yet? as soon as i start the car it starts gurgling? i have tried a new stat and a new pump with no change. i flushed the system and still does the same thing the car runs great with no smoke and the oil is clean could the head gasket be blowen and be putting preasure into the coolant system? or could it be that there is air in the system that i cant get bleed out? I dont know what else to try and it really stinks working on the car in this weather! I was told to take the cap off the radiator and start the car and keep filling the system that way but when i take off the cap as soon as i start the car it blows antifreeze out and it doesnt stop it will blow almost all of it out. something seems wrong i just cant figure out what it is? i tried taking the stat out but it still does the same thing? any ideas?
well its a old car, the radiator may be plugged, you may have to back flush it, along with the heater core, also if your gauge jumps around that much you have air in the system.
and this is in third gen why?
to piss off idiots like you ha ha ha ha lol
anyhow i bought a new cap and it still did the same thing. so i bit the bullet and put a head gasket on it and wouldnt ya know it. that was what it was. Runs perfect now! I'v never heard of a head gasket being bad and pushing air into the cooling system? is this a normal problem? usualy the car smokes cause the antifreeze is going into the cylinders?
Thanks for the help

To answer your question, yes it is actuallt fairly common for a head gasket on these 2.2's to leak combustion/exhaust into the cooling system. I've seen it about 20 times on 91-94 model cavis.
