I want to run 14's in my 98 Z24 5spd....any help?

Just want to know how much would i have to invest and also what mods are needed to run 14's? Just trying to hit a 14.9 at least or better...Any 3rd gen Z24 Gurus out there? Just got the car and want to play with it a lil' bit....want to be able to keep up with/beat stock mustangs and Civic Si's/swapped civics.....Also do these 2.4's respond well to mods?...any help would be greatly appreciated.......

intake/header/exhaust will help, but it takes some good drivin to do that. there's a cam swap you can do fairly cheap that'll help quite a bit....but if you wanna just do it quick and easy....toss a 75 shot of nitrous on there, and go all day. dry will work, but wet is a little safer. my buddy clay did 10-12 bottles of 75 dry and never blew anything up. just make sure you run premium gas and you should do just fine...maybe some 2 stage colder plugs.

good dry kit might run ya 300-450 depending where you get it.

good wet kit can be had like 550 I think

difference is a wet kit adds more fuel besides the nitrous so you don't lean out and detonate....detonation will cause your motor to blow....but like I said, my buddy did it and ran the track and street all the time and didn't hurt a thing

Drop in an ECOTEC with your 5spd then do the intake header and exhaust and you'll be in the 14's easy. Go check my cars specs and then the time slip I have posted. Thats all you need. If you spray your ECO your looking at high 13's.

Well I dont want to go that radical and change the motor, I kinda like the torqy lil 2.4...I dont wanna spray cause its my daily driver, but I might, but wat all motor mods will get me there? I was gonna do intake, timing, header, underdrive pulley, light flywheel/clutch.....I'm hearing A lot about the "HO" swap...whats that? Is it relatively easy to do? What do these cars run stock anyway? Can they beat stock Si's?

What a way to blow cash....... . Seriously with the money spent on a swap he could be doing a HELL of a lot better. Eco's are not from the hand of God here buddy..

they run mid-high 15's stock. and no

Like DropTopPaul said, Intake and full exhaust. Jackalope says his car hauls ass with his 2.5" piping. Though most people go 2.25" pipe. The underdrive pulley won't help you a whole heck of a lot I don't think. I'm not an expert on that, so I won't pretend to be. Not sure about the timing. Start thinking about a short throw shifter. The faster the driver, the faster the car.

Does anyone know of any companies that specialize in the 2.4 motor? Cause down here there is no aftermarket support of these cars....mostly Honda vendors.....Any of you guys know any sites that i could go to? Any recommendations?

that car is still to this day daily driven....don't be a retard with nitrous and you won't hurt a thing....turbos and superchargers are just as dangerous in the hands of a retard. spray 55 shot all day you won't even have to put premium in, although I'd recommend it just for added hp and insurance. 75 shot has been done 1000's of times....very few problems. usually if someone loses a motor its because they didn't listen to a bit of advice I just gave

Thanks, I might have to look into that nitrous.whats the best kit?...Is it plug and play or do I have to retard the timing somehow?...Just ordered a header, intake, mounts, and high flow cat...dont want exhaust cause i want it a sleeper car, and plus the cops are swarming out here!!!

GM Supercharger Kit, get one off ebay or the classifieds, spend 1,000$ and get it over with.

Guys chill! Sarcasm eludes you doesn't it ? Damn!

89Turbo, Thanks for the compliment man

Chris has a good idea or just grab all the bolt ons you can find and slap in a couple new cams. Get some practice and you should be there.

There is a guy on hear selling performance heads...shaved .020, ported/polished, gasket matched, w/vlave job...he wants 450 shipped for each head...just wanted to know if any of you guys know how good these heads are and is it worth the 450? Also what are the gains from this head?

450 is awfully cheap....link us to it and maybe someone here can vouch for him, most heads go for far more then that...like in the 1200 range. Sounds fishy having just hearing that. NX and NOS make good wet kits....although I've never heard of anyone havin much trouble with zex either. Install is fairly simple, not too complicated, and it comes with instructions. The GM supercharger is a nice way to go about it, it'll get you there for the most part. nitrous is faster and cheaper though IMO...and it doesn't make you run premium all the time...only when you're gonna spray. cheaper to use as a daily driver

its "relatively" easy to do..but im no so sure you want to jump into a project like that yet(maybe im wrong) ..and yes, they can beat Si's ...but in YOUR car it would involve changing the motor and all the wiring in the engine bay including the pcm...
what i suggest is getting the HO intake manifold and throttle body..its a common mod for 2.4s and seems to give a good gain...
other than that just listen to these guys, exhaust,MOUNTS, MAYbe cams, practice your shifting...

He may have a 98, but the gm charger kit can still be put on it. Just needs a new starter and some other stuff. There is a sticky about it in the boost forum.

yea man, as Tristan said, you can do the swap little or no pain... just needs some newer parts... the engines are almost the same, so everything will line up... so its completely plausable. read the stick in the boost forum, and then get boosted like you want to

I have a 98 and the GM SC, so yea its possible, you need the 2K+ starter, aftermarket FMU, AFPR, 320 CC injectors and your pretty much set.

I don't know if Cavs are different than Sunfires for any reason, but my fiance's manual '01 GT ran a 15.27 with an intake & upper/lower motor mounts. Cheap mods. He doesn't race too often, but he ran a 15.4 completely stock & 15.3 with just the intake.

If it were me trying to reach a 14 knowing that, I'd probably go for a lightweight hood & trunk as well as probably taking out some of the interior for the day. I say that because I have a noticable difference going from my stock hood to the fiberglass one. Heck, taking out my sub box dropped .5 off of my time. Make sure you take out anything extra including the spare & jack, I don't know what else you might have in there since your registry isn't filled out Adjusting the tires is important too, remember to put air into the back tires.

If an '98 Z can run the same, I'd say practice & research into where to put the right stuff is the best thing to do. It's sad that I've seen so many modded cars that just go slower, so I think research is key so you don't do anything counter productive like 3" exhaust.
