My GirlFriends 95 cavalier 2.2 auto's fuel pump is crappin out on her, dealerships wants like 500 bucks for a new one that will fit her car. I called everyone and their dog around here for a used one, but to no avail i cannot find one... I talked to the dealership and they said that the only fuel pump that works on the 95 cavalier is a fuel pump from the same year...(95 car only a 95 fuel pump will work)... so my question is well if that is true? i mean could i get a 96 or 97 to fit/work, or were they telling the truth? or could i possibly replace tank and all and that would work? i dunno 500 bucks for a 2000 dollar car is kinda well f'ed up. Thanks for your help -- Brandon Maston, or if you are familiar with the fredericton, new brunswick, canada area and know of a great place for parts i would appreciate that as well...

Well, IIRC, the 3rd Gen J-body uses the same fuel pump as the 2nd Gen J-body. Either V6 or 4cylinder. Another note, from now on please refer to them as a
STEALership
The pump is so expensive because you're not just getting the pump. You get the whole assembly that goes in the tank. A couple web sites I would suggest trying:
www.car-part.com
This will allow you to do a parts search of some junk yards. Link to their site and probably a phone number to get ahold of them. This site will automatically pull up the interchange information. So if you see parts from years different from 95, it'll work.
www.junkyarddog.com
This site has you put in the request. Then emails the yards in their database. If a yard has the part for you, they'll email you back.
you are my saviour found exactly what i needed for $150, thank you... once again the jbo crew has pulled my girlfriends ass out of the fire.

shooff you say the 3rd generation cavy uses the same fuel pump as the 2nd generation yet neither generation 2nd or 3rd to my knowledge even had a 6 cylinder engine available they were all 4's and by 2003, you only had one choice as far as the engine went anyway. 84 through about what 91 92 93 somewhere in there may have had a 6 but 91 92 93 was like the tail end of the first generation wasn't it.

The 2nd Gen J-body ran from 1988 to 1994. Dending on year, the options for the Cavalier's motor would have been a 2.0OHV or the 2.2OHV, then we get into TBI, and port injection models of that motor. An optional motor would have been the 2.8 or 3.1 MPFI V6. I'm pretty sure that engine all Z24's in the 2nd gen had a V6.
The 3rd Gen started in 95. And runs to current. Options on the motors was 2.2OHV (95-97) or 2200OHV (98-02) and the 2.4L LD9 (96-01) Ecotec (02+). In 95 there was the low output 2.3L Quad4 engine, and only 95.

That link shall have some useful information for you.
oh ok so the first generation really only ran about 6 or 7 yrs then from about 81,82 to about 87 or so.
So How did you determind it is your fuel pump? Did You check and or Change the fuel filter? Another problem could be a O2 sensor's?
i priced out a fuel pump for my 93 2.2 for about 75 bucks from the parts store...
however... i dunno the process in a third gen ... but in a second gen... the gas tank has to be dropped and to do so you have to cut the exhaust... just to get to the fuel pump... which is a pain in the ass... so when i swap mine out, im going to replace it with a Walbro pump...
im still hoping GM got smart and cut a hole under the back seat for fuel pump access like honda and mitsubishi... cause having to drop the tank is definately stealership tatics... whats worse is that my Second gen's tank is metal... which is heavier than mine third gen's plastic tank...

yea the only reason im going walbro is because i might as well put performance back in if the job is that big of a pain in the ass... it would be a waste of my time to put stock @!#$ back in... =P

The specs for the pumps are as follows:
Stock pump - Free Flows 80psi@28gph (gallons per hour)
Operating Flow - 45psi@20gph
New Pump - Free Flows 100psi@47gph
Operating Flow - 51psi@41gph
You'll still need an aftermarket Fuel PressureThe pressure of fuel in the fuel rail. RegulatorRegulates Fuel PressureThe pressure of fuel in the fuel rail. to a constant level to maintain fuel rail pressure for the injectors. it's the little can on your fuel rail. to take full
advantage of the increased flow. And dont run the pressure over
70 psi at the regulator, since this can cause the fuel injectors to
shut down (trust me on this). I run mine at 56 psi all day long,
works great and I still get decent gas milage when my foot isnt on the floor
not a huge difference, but still better than stock

Yea, I have a 88 Sunbird 2.0L Turbo as well. Yea. The 2nd Gen are cheap to get the fuel pump! Mine was about $150.00 cdn for a prem.
But those 98 Sunfire and Cav's are 3rd Gen's are expensive. I also damaged the damn Quick connect for the fuel pump filter(Quick Connect my Axx). So I looking at the JunkYards for that.. I am Also looking to find a external fuel pump or by pass pump or a Preformance pump. I would feel ROBed Paying $512.00 for a OE manufacted fuel pump. I would Rather pay $700.00 for a Preformance one! There Was some odd Fuel booster that i seen some where on the web. It going in where your fuel filter would be and it has a mini pump that is said to help for about $125us or so..
to run an inline aftermarket pump... do you have to remove your factory one, or will the inline just pull through it???
also AFAIK the fuel filter setup is the same between the 2nd and 3rd gens... if that helps ya at all...
I haven't taken the fuel pump out of this 2.2L Yet! But I am sure a piece of pipe from where the fuel pump is can always work to use the inline pump?
But The other one I see I think was just to add some of the lost fuel presser. But Doing my old 88 Sunbird fuel pump 2 twice I learn to replace the fuel tank as well the older tank was sucking rust and plastic protector in the tank. But Man I am not much for wanting to drop the tank in this 98 sunfire. For a @!#$ty OE fuel pump? There is a few differents between 2nd and 3th gen's. The 3th Gen has those cheap crappy quick connect that has broken on that 98 sunfire. The 3th has a bigger fuel tank as well. and a hell of lot more electronics that will cause more problems.. I am finely Shelling out $400.00 for 2 different OBD-II logger to connect to my laptop and see what else is bugger up?
