engine swap and emissions

Ok guys, I didn't know where to put this but seems that Third Gen gets the most questions on sawping engines. The question is, how do you guys (with sawpped engines) go about when there's time for emissions? Let's say that I wat to swap my 2200 for a 2.4. what do I have to do in order not to have any problems with the gov. The VIN would say that Im supposed to have a 2200. The emissions guy would asume that there's a 2200 and the computer, or whatever they use to test , would think that there's a 2200 as well! So, for those of you who have swapped engines enlighten us with some info on this topic. I assume its almost the same as dealing with the insurance when swaping engines.

well..i have a 2.3 swap..and i simply do the "pipe sniffer" test ...you dont HAVE to do the obd2 link up test..
when the car is hooked to the pcm it simply wants to know if emissions is throwing a code or if the CEL is trying to come on..thats about it..as far as what engine you have..if you swapped in a 2.4 wouldnt you have the 2.4 pcm to go with it?????? but if all else fails just tell them to do a tail pipe test instead..any problems after that bring it to ME and ill get you a sticker

I guess you're right about the 2.4 pcm. I didn't know that you could have a tail pipe test done on obd 2 cars. I guess that will work! Thanks for the info scott! btw do you work in one of these stations or what sticker are you talking about !

its not the SIZE of the engine he was concerned about...it was having a differnt pcm than what came with the car...

We have the CA style emissions here in GA, the IM240 and newer OBD-II types that they plug into the ALDL connector. I've swapped several motors/trans in all kinds of GM cars and had to deal with the emissions people (State/Local) many times with this. If you swap in a NEWER motor, i've never had a problem told them that the original blew up and I got a newer motor & installed it myself. If you install an OLDER motor you may have a problem, and might have to go to the state Official's office and if you did a good job installing it they will give you a "waiver" or "hot rod exemption". Present these papers to the inspection guy and they will type in the state numbers and get you hooked up. Note that these "waiver" or "Hot rod exemption" do not mean that you don't do emissions, what they generally let you test against more leinent standards. If you installed a similar motor (2.4 for a 2.2) they just run the standard test plugging into the ALDL. If you installed an older motor or something like the V6, then the hot rod exemption lets you test against the car the doner motor came from. A little mor hassle, but your legal and don't have to worry about getting nailed by the emissions police. Go to your state's web site and it should have links for those. They give you instructions for where to go and what to ask for. Hope that helps.
