i dont want this to be a discussion about whether the 2.3L is better than the 2.4L.
i just want to know if the motor will physically bolt to the chassis with no problems. are the mounting points all the same for 95-02 cavy's???
I also figure that there will be some electrical issues. Can i run the 00 PCM on the 95 harness or do i need to get a 00 wiring harness and redo it all. What other options do i have?? (jumper harnesses?)

I am a friend of delslo9. We are wanting to build a cavy. I have no knowledge of what swaps can be done. We have a nice heathly 2.4 DOHC with Auto trans. We want to peelout. Hit us back. We are willing to be proud J-body owners.
Any engine that came in a J-body will easily bolt into any other J-body.... within reason.... you can't bolt a 3.1 V6 into a third gen... never came stock... you get my drift?
You can take any third gen engine and stuff it in a 95. 2.3L Quad 4, 2.4L Twin Cam, 2.2L LN2, 2200 LN2, L61 Ecotec... where the engine mount bolts to remains unchanged. Same with the lower mount (dogbone).
What DOES change is the transmission. If you stick with an auto, then no problem... the mounts are the same. The 95-99 5 speed (Isuzu-designed transmission) mounts are different from the 00-05 5-speed (Getrag transmission) mounts. So if you cross the line there, you have to change mounts. Or if you change from auto to 5 speed, or vice-versa.... you have lots more to change.
If there's nothing wrong with the 2.3L... there's no point swapping to a 2.4L... they're pretty much on-par with each other. Regardless of which engine and trans you go with, you're going to need the right PCM to run it.... 95 5 speed is an OBD1 car.. 95 auto is OBD2. 96-98 the 2.4L is the same, you could use any of those PCMs and it should be fine. 99-02, you need to swap some things. Ecotec... you may as well gut the car and start over...
When i took the motor out i disconnected the harness by the firewall (big rectangular connector). Can i just plug in the 2000 LD9 harness at this connector on the 95.......... if i do that can i put in a cluster that has a tachometer in it??? (mine doesnt)

I don't think so. The 95-99 cars use the PCM to control the engine, and the convenience centre to control the rest of the car. 2000+ cars use a bunch of other stuff you would have to install... the cluster, lights, keyless entry, etc are all moved to a new Body Control Module. It speaks "Class 2" protocols with the PCM... in order to make the car go.
However... you could in theory grab a 99 harness and PCM... since the 99 engine is the same as the 2000 engine, but without the Class 2 crap. That might work... you may have to see if all the pins do in fact match up though... I don't have schematics for that, sorry.
So, Lenko, if I'm reading that correctly, just try to stick with a 95-99 engine to not have to worry about the "Class 2" issues?
Schematics for that stupid plug are no where to be found. I have looked, its not on any wiring diagram. They dont want us to know.
connector is called C100 if that helps and it is a 38 pin. Grey half (engine) and black half (body) on an 01 cav. No pin lay out available.

Kardain, not exactly... since the 96-98 2.4L's are the same.... and the 99-02 2.4L's are the same.... but the Class 2 wiring kicks in in 2000 model cars.... grab a 99-02 engine, with a 99 harness... should work easily enough. There will be things to change... but off the top of my head I can't think of them all.
I have schematics for the 2000... in my service manual. I don't have any other years. They're not on NY J-Bodies' library either
John, do you show that c100 connector any where in your manual. I have a Mitchell repair software program at work and nothing is listed.

GM service manual for the J-car, Body and Accessories section, Wiring Systems... page 8-279 and 8-280
Every single connector in the car is in here..
OK well if i do put the motor in this car i probably WILL NOT keep the AC or stereo...... That should make it a lil bit easier... what do yall think??? I F*N HATE WIRES!!!

As John has stated you will want to run a pre2000 engine bay wiring and computer. You could still run a 2000+ motor, just would need to drill and tap for the knock sensor. TO run a 2000+ motor and wiring, you also need inside wiring, fuel tank, lines etc.. Basicly everything needed for a Ecotec swap.

Turns out that the motor in the car now is a 2.2, not a 2.3!!! owner said it was a 2.3, but im not complaining considering i bought it for $150!!! I still need a 99 harness and 99 PCM or can I use the 2000 pcm i already have?

and now you also need a tranny (at least a bellhousing) to do a 2.3L or a 2.4L swap
