Hello Everyone! I have a 1998 Cavalier Z24 2.4L
My question is about the way it idles. It has done this since i brought it (3 years ago) and the guy i brought it off of stated that it also idled this way for him. Basically, sometimes when i start the car at first it sounds good and idles fine... but then it you watch the rpms it goes up and down really bad and you can hear it, it sounds like it is going to stall. This is not all the time though it could be warm outside or cold doesnt matter... some days it acts this way and other days it just starts right up. The only way i know how to get it to stop is by giving it some gas a few times and then wait until it starts idling normal. If i do try to pull out it sputters and almost stalls out until i put the pedal to the floor (not good) and even that way it can stall and it takes it awhile to actually go (it hesitates). I do not know what is wrong with my sweet cavy... I have been dealing with this problem for a few years now.. i Hate it because it makes me look like i cant drive stick.. its embarrassing.
I know i could take it to a dealer or a good mechanic... but i know they are just going to start replacing things... Due to the fact the the engine light does not come on. I have heard from a few people that have the same problem.. but no one seems to know what it is.. I have replaced a few sensors but it didnt seem to help.
If anyone knows PLEASE TELL ME!!! Thanks for your help.

coil pack, my guess, somethign with ignition, find a good gm dealer taht doesnt pay flatrate, and take it to them.
Could be fuel related, since the mil doesnt come on. If you havent changed the fuel filter that would be a good place to start. I have heard of this complaint on here but I havent ran into this at work.

I have heard from a few people that they have the same problem with their 98 cavalier's... but is seems like no one really knows how to fix the problem.
have the same prob in my 2.4 Auto, replaced fuel filter, manifold o2 sensor, EGR valve, and today spark plugs
the EGR valve seemed to do the best of stopping this but i was having a misfire in Cylinder #2(finally a CEL came on today after this problem for 6months) so i replaced the spark plugs and that seemed to work to fix it.. so far i havent had a problem it has idled pretty smooth and took off fine.. but ive only started and drove it 3times since..for spark plugs i just replaced with the OE AC Delco Professional Platinums from Auto Zone.. pricey($5.99 a plug) but i would rather use what works best..
I am going to try replacing some sensors.. i dont really wanna play a guessing game.. I am replacing the TPB, MAP, And IAT. Hopefully this works... probably not...
I replaced the TPS and IAT..... i tried to replace the MAP but i am not sure where it is located or the part store gave me the wrong sensor... Anyone knows where the MAP Sensor is located on a 1998 Cavalier 2.4 engine???
Turns out the part store gave me the right box for my sensor but the wrong sensor... so anyways i changed the MAP sensor today.. and guess what the CAR STILL IDLES FUNNY!!! HELP!!!!!????????????????
i got that problem and replaced all those parts but mine has stalled. i figure the injectors are sticking or the computer isnt givin it enough timing
