I've had the cavi since new, and dont drive it hard at all, but it just hit 30,6xx miles and the pads are on the squeelers already. WTF? Is this normal? I got some higher quality pads to replace em with so I'm good there, but do brakes normally go by 30k miles? [/noob]

Stock... and loving every minute of it.
hell i think i did my first brake job at around 20k...
GO PATS!!!
I took my tires off two weeks ago. 27,000 on my 04, brakes are about 50% gone. I go very easy on them.
- 2004 Cavalier - 124k, owned since new
i had the same problem at about the same millage. just up grade the pads and have the rotters turned. or do what i did and got some drilled and slotted rotters.
i think i replaced my brakes at like 12k miles....rears were replaced at like 36k....
suprised you got that far
but alot has to do wether you have the rears adjusted properly
ive gotten 45k from stock fronts , but i also adjusted my rears every 5,000 miles , and i got 65k out of the rears

Have fun replacing your drilled and slotted when they start cracking.
And yeah, 30k would be about right. You didn't just slap pads on and go, did you? You need to turn the rotors as well when you put the pads in. We had a truck come in the shop today that had 70k miles on the pads, and they looked almost new. O_o

Wow, I'm amazed that you can get more than 30K miles on Jbody front brakes.
Owning 4 sunfires, I've probably done the brakes like ten times in 3-4 years.
The fronts lasted about 20K miles on the 04' and 05'.
alot has to do with the way you drive , ive always been easy on brakes
perfect example on brakes , a friend of my dads , had a 77 chevy 4wd 1/2ton shorty , 350 4spd , he had close to 100k on the truck and it still had the original brakes and clutch , and 20 years old
so its all on driving
and drilled rotors cracking is a thing of the past , atleast as far as how quick they crack , ive seen drilled rotors with over 60,000 with no cracks , and used fairly hard
I have over 70,000km's on my stock breaks
I downshift alot though
I replaced the wife's brakes on her 01 at 36K miles, just after the warranty expired.
I've got 52,000 on mine and jist hit the squeelers.......Damn brakes.........
I don't want to do a brake job......
My 04's brakes are getting that not so nice sounding too. I have 30k miles. It's funny, my vette, which I autox and drag race, and street race a lot has the original brakes still in good shape at 80k. The typhoons brakes caught on fire the first day I put them on. I am upgrading them soon (advance auto premium brakes suck). I just wanted them to get by for a few months, but dang.
Also, last time I did cavalier brakes, it was the same price for new rotors as it was to get them turned. Cavalier rotors are cheap. I used to gear down a lot too, but I read some interesting stuff on the breakin of my clutch when I had the blazer. It was really pushing not gearing down much. Basically the point of view was, which is easier to replace, a clutch or the brakes. I read a lot of other places that commented on the brakes are made for slowing the car more than the engine. Now this is different if you are using a lower gear to go down steep grades or is you are rev matching when gearing down. Ever since that I have been real cautious as to not gear down quite as much as I used to.

Also what will wear brakes down is if u do mainly stop and go driving or all highway/interstate driving. Mileage isn't really a factor in determining how long your brakes last as the car is going to accumulate mileage going in a straight line. You could drive 500 miles without ever touching the brakes. I usually count on doing brakes every year maybe 1.5 years.

im only at 18.5k miles and I have had to have brake work done twice cause they wore funny and made the car kinda lump along when I slowed down.
Hi
if you want longer brake life..... do n body front swap for bigger 12 inch dual piston caliper brakes and IRS in the back for disk brakes. Its acutally a very cheap mod unless you dont have universal 5 lug wheels..... compare that to the 1300 dollar brake upgrades online

Changed mine around 85k miles, they were more than likely not originals, got about 10k miles on them, and they're doing great. Changed Calipers, pads, and rotors though in the front, have had the rears readjusted twice, looked new each time (was gonna replace the 2nd time till i realised they were same thickness as new). Thinking about readjusting them soon for good measure. Have ceramic pads on Autozone rotors, and get squeaks every now and again, but am told its cause they are ceramic, is this true?
Yipppers...Ceramic is hard as shyt, so they don't wear as fast as semi-metalics. The squeeling you hear is caused because the pad is so hard, therefore your rotor is getting eaten-up faster than normal. There is nothing wrong with this, jist remember next time you do a brake job, check the thickness of you rotor it might be under specs.
Dadon you say the squeeling you hear is caused because the pad is so hard, does that apply to the back brakes because that is where my squealing seems to be coming from, when i bought my car in aug. of 05 it had 18,000 miles on it 25,000 i had to have both the fronts and backs done. 39,000 miles had to have the fronts done again, at one point someone put the brakes on incorrectly and i got the squeeler sound almost immediately thankfully no damage was done to the rotors, and there was still a good 8 millimeters or so left on the pads. i thought i heard someone mention ceramic pads is there an advantage to using ceramic pads, i imagine the brakes would probably last somewhat longer but are ceramic pads more expensive etc.
