not true. if the tach is adjustable you can wire it in and make it read for a 2 cyl vehicle and you will get your correct rpms. if not and you dont wantto spring for the tach adapter just set it to 4 cyl and whatever rpm it reads to you double that.

True. If you get the right tach you won't have to blow money on a tach adapter. I like this tach myself as it's only 3 1/2" and it's adjustable.

^he said he already bought the tach... so why would he buy ANOTHER tach at $120, when you can get an adapter for significantly less than that?

His autometer may be adjustable to begin with, but I was just listing an example of one that is just in case by some odd reason someone searches in the future and would like to get a tach that works. The OP could always return his tach for a refund and pick up this CP2012 for
$45 on Ebay
well i got the tach adapter off ebay pretty cheap so im going to go that route.

Good deal Ryan. I saw bidding on one for around $30ish which is around half or more what I've seen them at e-tailors for. Retail price on those is a little high imo.
I've been trying to hook up a tach for awhile. Tried some time in the past, all the knowledge is out of my memory now. Would someone please tell me how to make a tach work for my 99 5 spd cavalier? 2.2
I swear Cody's post should be a sticky. Not only do you show the exact wire to hook up to you put to rest the myth that you have to run a tach adapter, which you don't if you pick up a tach with a 2 cyl setting.
i hooked mine to the orange to black and white to red......my adapter came from rksport
orange to black and white to red........iv got a 01
sunpro states te same thing for their adapter...
i believe if you use the tach signal wire coming from the PCM you wont need the adapter but if you tap in at the coils you will. can't remember for sure i'm a little rusty on 2.2s

rksport adaptor is crap. sometimes they work and sometimes they dont.
first i bought rk sport tach adaptor, and it didn't work (god i wish i had realized this sooner) then i went to walmart and bought an equus adjustable tach and installed it in 3 minutes without any adapters... as simple as that

he must have, since he found a year old post about it.

Everything about how to make a tach work in a tachless J has been covered in the Interior/Audio & Electronics/Third Gen forums...
That's why I don't see why it's so hard to figure out. Either use the 9117 Autometer Adapter, buy a tach with a 2 cyl. setting or install a cluster w/tach.
