oil in my intake?
Thursday, May 03, 2007 8:34 PM
i had my intake (still factory) all the way out and was giving the engine bay a good cleaning and i noticed a liquid in the box part that connects to the TB and stuck my hand in it.... it was oil
should i be very concerned or could it just be something from when i had my oil changed it came from the tube coming off the head overflow maybe?

there is a breether tube that goes from the intake to the valve cover, its meant so oil vapors get sucked into the engine and burnt up rather then vented into the atmosphere. Its an emissions thing. But since its puts a slight vacum affect (lots of air flowing over a the end of a small tube is going to create a vacum) inside the valve cover you will always have a little bit of oil thats gets sucked out into the intake.

Its normal.

thats why some people use the mini K&N style breather filters. may not do any real thing for performance, but youve gotta figure...that oil is gonna get inthe the head intake ports, which are hot, and form varnish and gum, which will eventually need to be cleaned out. if you use the filter, and dont suck up the oil, you dont have to clean it out.

and, now that ive mentioined the use of breather filters...let the flaming begin...

As mentioned above, its normal, especially on higher mileage engines.

on older vehicles replacing the pcv valve will fix it too.

on newer vehicle there is no PCV valve so that doesn't help

On my 98 2.4 it's a CV not a PCV

You think you have oil in your intake box, try installing the Crane roller rockers in your engine. You have to dremel out a big portion of the baffle inside the valve cover to get clearance, so more oil gets sucked up that tube and deposited in your intake. A breather filter will stop that, but then you have to deal with the oil vapor being deposited all over your engine bay. I know what I am about to suggest might seem "rice" to alot of folks, but a cheap oil-catch can (search ebay) will help ALOT with this problem.

a catch can is very good advise

As stated above it is just your crankcase breather allowing oil to enter the intake. Eventually you will notice a build up in the throttle body and intake ports, i have found a shot of carb cleaner (o2 safe of course) works wonders for removing the buildup and allowing air to better flow to the engine.

6 quarts? Do yourself a favor, pull the plugs and look at them. I'd bet they got oil soaked from the extra quart and a half.
