I have a 99 coupe and i have like 110,000 miles on my motor and tranny. Just curious to see if it is possible to do the 2.2 ecotec swap in my car so i can supercharge it? Has it been done? Is it fairly easy? What all would I need? How much would this cost me?

But with a 99 doesn't he need to rewire the entire car to OBDII so all the electronics are compatible? In that case no its not a quick and easy swap. But it can certainly be done
OBDII started in the 95 model year on the 2.2's, with the DOHC option, it was 96 when the LD9 was introduced.

^ Actually it started in 95. GM just did a half ass job of implementing it, hence the OBD-1 communications with the OBD-2 connector.
And BTW, OBD-2 is an emissions and diagnostics standard, not a wiring or computer standard. All J's from 96 and up had OBD-2 (with some in 95 when they started implementing it), and there are at least 5 different computer/wiring systems from 95 to 05.

back to the question, yes it can be done-- how much time and money do you want to spend. I just completed a 2000 2.2 swap into a 96 for my daughter- changed almost everything- motor, trans, all wiring, computer, bcm, dash,sdm, gas tank, etc, etc. best if you have a complete parts car- my cost --
400 for the 96 cavi, 800 for the 2000(50k miles) -- but I also updated to a 2003 front and rear while I was at it, leather seats, new windshield, paint,wheels, tires and of course a spoiler-- total 2600-- i love ebay!! I'll post a pic in the next few days

My problem is a little different. I lost my job because my car spun a rod bearing and I couldnt make it there. So money is at an almost zero. I did buy a running 98 2200. My car is a 96 2.2 Manual Tranny. I was hoping that maybe i could just switch the intakes because all of the other senors sync up except for those on the throttle body. When I removed both intakes, I saw that mine has round ports when the new one has square ports. I was wondering, can i just swtich the throttle body itself so that all of the sensors are the same? Or do I need to switch heads?
OK i answered my own question about the throotle bodies and its a no. Now, CAN i interchange the heads or are the blocks different. My friend at O'reily's looked a pictures for both head gaskets and said they look different and the 96 has more ports. Any help would be greatly appreciated seeing as I need to get back on the road ASAP. Thanks.
Well I have both motors complete. Are the parts something extra outside of what both motors have? I cant imagine that but who knows. But see I know a guy who had a 96 s10 that his son messed up the head on. He swapped a 2000 head onto a 96 block, but i dont know if that is a different thing all together, going new head to old block versus old to new. I also have a 2000 block from that guy, but it has the same problem as mine, bad crank.
the 98 motor will go into the 96, but the harness and computer from the 98 have to stay with the 98 motor. Not sure about 98's but when I was debating swapping a 2000 2200 into my 97 2.2, I was informed that I'd need to swap out bcm, body wiring, dash, etc.....
Well I checked at the parts store and the only differences in the harnesses is where they plug up to the EGR and the TB, so if i was able to swap my head, then this wouldnt be a problem. My god i really hope i dont have to have the 98 harness, i have the computer, but the problem is finding one. I dont have the money for ebay and all of the parts yards around here immediately cut the harnesses when they get cars. Even if i have the 98 computer and harness, wont i have to do some rigging from the computer to my chassis wiring harness? or is that a seperate computer altogether?
Why not cut the EGR and TB plugs out of the 98 harness and plice them into the 96 harness?
I dont know if that would work, i dont know if the connectors have the same number of wires. If they did why couldnt i just stay with the 96 plugs. If i was able to change the heads, i wouldnt need to do that. I am going to call that guy today that put the new head on the older motor. Well I would like to announce that using only the 96 head and the 98 block, all i needed was to use the 96 head gasket. The car runs beautifully, seems to be somehow tighter than the orginal, if that makes any sense. LoL, maybe it is just feeling my car after it being down for a year.
Now the only problem is that the slave cylinder is leaking. Easy fix compared to a rebuild. Thanks for all of your input and advice on anything I have ever needed help with. Although some of your ways may be unorthodox, they still get the point across. Ever since my friend K.W. (God rest his soul) told me about this site, it has been an invaluable source of information.
