Muffler rattling?

At stop lights, not constantly but intermittently, there is a metal-on-metal vibrating noise at the back of the car. Sounds like the muffler is hitting something. I could get under it and look/listen, but someone might know exactly what I'm talking about here.

Someone in my last thread mentioned muffler straps. Is this what it sounds like when they're done?

My reverse lights don't work, which I just noticed in a reflection the other day. I'm going to try bulbs, but neither one works, so I'm wondering how hard it is to replace the neutral safety switch. 2.2L, manual tranny.

Also;

I'm going to pull and look at my #4 plug. I had a check engine light 2 days after I bought it. There were four codes.... EVAP system gross leak, Oxygen sensor bank 2, Misfire detected cylinder 4, and some other code. I watched all the data as it ran and the o2 sensor was fine, so I cleared it. I found a leak in that EVAP hose around the pulley side of the engine, reaching behind the PS pump, so I put another one on.

In misfire data, number 4 had an intermittent misfire... every car is going to misfire a little and go unnoticed, but cyl 4 was the only one doing it. The motor is reworked/rebuilt and has new injectors. All the codes are clear and have been for 2 weeks now, so I think EVAP was my real problem, with all the other codes existing from the old motor.

Well since you don't have any info on your car in your registry I don't know how old it is. About the muffler though i have a farting kind of rattling sound coming from it and it is because a baffle is loose and rattling around. My car is 12 years old so the muffler is 12 years old. Another thing is that GM used two ways to attach the muffler one was a rubber mount was placed on the car and a rod was welded to the muffler that attached to the mount. The other was a metal strap which went around the muffler and had a hook in it which hooked into a different kind of rubber mount. Check those. I would also let the muffler cool and shake it to see if you hear anything.

The proper way of using the word seen. It is not I seen it that would be I saw it. He has seen the car is the right way to use the word. English class is Cool. By the way thats my sig

Sounds like you have a 2200 with the coils mounted to the side of the head. pull the #4 wire off of the coil, clean the terminal corosion off and put it back on. If this doesnt fix it then you probably need a tuneup. There was a service bullitin on #4 coil post corrosion.
As far as the muffler strap, the strap will rust clear through allowing the exhaust to bounce up and down off of the body and rear axle.

I apologize. My car is a 97 model with 114,000 miles. I will shake the muffler sometime and see what happens.

The muffler isn't THAT loose... I have kicked it and it didn't do much moving.

It's a 97 2.2L OHV... not sure if thats the 2200 but I don't think it is because I've seen other Cavaliers with a plastic piece labeled "2200" that mine doesn't have under the hood. I know that makes me sound car stupid, but I'm really not, I'm just not familiar with these cars. I worked as a mechanic's apprentice and now I sell car parts.

Anyway, good idea on the coil terminal. I'll have to check it out. Even though the engine was redone, and I'm good friends with the guy who did it (worked with him), I seriously doubt he would have bothered with that.

By the way, tonight I took the Cavalier on its second and third highway excursions. The first one wasn't a long one, I just exit hopped, but this one was a good 20 minutes.

In comparison with my Saturn, which I loved, I think this car is much better on the highway. It doesn't strain to do 70, which I attribute to gearing (5-spd versus 4-spd) and probably engine size (2.2L versus 1.9L). The Saturn was at 3000 RPMs at 70, and giving it more gas just got a slow reaction. With this car, I can hit the gas harder from 70 and it picks up nicely. And on the long, cop-free bridge here, 85 felt just fine.

I also like the cars' handling better, it just feels better to control and steer. Much less wind noise, though not quiet. Overall probably a better car if I wasn't so partial to my Saturn.

My thoughts exactly when reading this. The heat sheild may be rattling against the muffler.

Although, as mentioned above, the baffle(s) may be loose inside the muffler.
You may not be able to get it to rattle when it's cold, but when it heats up, and the case expands, it may allow it to rattle.

Nah, it will do it at the first red light after a couple blocks of driving.

Exhausts heat up really quick. Sometimes just moving my car prevents me from working on my exhaust.

ummm, bend over and have a look. It really shouldnt that 10 posts and 10 days to find a rattle. Sorry to sound rude, but its a rattle man, its 2 piece of something hitting together, just make them not hit together.

I have a 96 Sunfire and have had the same problem with the reverse lights. The neutral safety switch was the problem. It is also very easy to change.

I can't really explain what I did but when I got under the car, the muffler wasn't sitting how it should. I moved it to where it sat right in its bracket and I haven't heard the noise since.

I'm very happy with the gas mileage this car is getting. In my 1.9L Saturn I was getting 25mpg mixed city/highway. My last tank in this car, I got 30.27mpg doing the same driving.

Yesterday I moved 25 miles away from my place of employment (I was living 3 miles away) so I'm excited to see what it does with mostly highway driving.

On my second gen, the insides of the cat began to fall apart, thus rattling around in the cat at idle..Annoying as hell!
