rev limiter at 4k

I have a 96 sunfire, 2.2 auto. I bought it just for the motor to put in my cavy but I want to get it running right before i pull it. The sunfire wont rev over 4000 rpms, it climbs there kind of slugishly and bounces off the rev limiter at 4k, the thing wont even spin the tires.
Any ideas? Is this just a sensor issue or what?
thanks

try unhooking the exhaust before the cat converter. see if that helps.

From your registry, it looks as though both cars were originally manuals. But just to ask, are you using an automatic ECU? I know the magic number for an auto in neutral is 4K.
If not, check the typical things for problems. plugs, wires, coil packs, fuel filter/ pump and like "jo mx" said, make sure your cat isn't clogged.

That's the idea. That P/N rev limit is there to help keep you from tearing up the tranny. Mainly from doing redline neutral drops.
It's not a defect, it's how it's made.

my 98 with 5 speed and 2200 engine, doesnt seem to have a rev limiter, floor mat slid up at held the gas down, and the car redlined and stayed there, i turned off the car and save her

^ 5 speeds don't have neutral rev limiters, only autos.

um that's kinda what a rev limiter does, it limits it to around a certain RPM, that's why it "stayed there" at redline rather than going higher.

... wow.

I read that as his engine went into the redline and stayed there -- which is what it would do without a limiter.

Way to assume he's a idiot without due cause ... wow.

You must be the only one that percieved it that way then.

... wow.
