Well, Well, Well...
Looks like I get to do a swap in my 98 Sunfire GT automatic (2.4).
Car broke down on me, no one knew what it was. My uncle got to it and said something about the #2 valve overheated and "welded itself to the rail".
So, instead of replacing it with another 2.4, a friend of my dad's wants to do a swap. Hes going to sell me the engine, and do the swap for $600.
He said the engine he has is out of a grand am. Didn't really give me any extra info, but I'm ready..
$300 labor, $300 engine.
I haven't gotten to talk to him about it very much so I don't know if he knows about all of the special tricks around the exhaust, mounts, and everything else, but what would be your guys input, suggestions, and ideas?
Also, do you know if the starter and alternator would be interchangeable or if I would have to sell my 1-month old parts?
I know most of you guys have Cavs, but any help and input would be greatly appreciated.
Oh yeah, he said the vale welded itself, but if that was the case with the valve dropping some, how come all 4 cylinders have over 150psi compression?

I just spoke with the guy (great timing, huh?) and he found out he might have a newer 2000+ Ecotech from a SF or Cavy in the lot. Hes talking about possibly sticking a new ecotech instead of the v6, for the fact that it would be easier and better on gas. Anyone here attempted this before?

well first of all I dont think your uncle knows what he is talking about. Never heartd of any parts ever getting so hot that they weld themselves to each other. They will break and launch themselves out of the engine before that happens. And if you have 150 psi then you probably just have a bad coil tower, common part to go bad and shows symptoms of popping, backfires, no run , poor spark, missing under a load and so on. You might want to look into your 2.4 a little further.
Im Not trying to talk you out of a swap, just letting you know.
And the v6 actually will get better mileage than the 4 banger if driven within reason. I know that my 3.4 gets better highway mileage than my wifes 2.2. Im not sure on the actual mileage, I just know on the same trip she has to stop for gas first, I 'll stil have 1/8 tank. I dont know what mileage the stick guys are getting but It cant be worse than the 4cyl.
several guys have dont echo swaps, do a search, it will come up. Your going to have to swap over all wiring, modules , cluster... gut your car and use the 00+ wiring, computer, bcm......

For the 3400 question, you will need to replace the trans as well. The 2.4 trans does not have the same bolt pattern as the 2.2
I'll have to look up parts, but I am fairly certain the alt will not work on teh 3400, the starer, is probably in the same category, however, if you can get a new nose for the starter and swap that over (read: find a dead 3400 or 2.2 starter), that should work...

aside from exterior cosmetic and some interior electrical, Cav's and Fires are identical.

You are going to have more hassle putting in the Eco than the 3400. You will have to swap over near all the car wiring from bumper to bumper for the ECM to work, or run standalone.
As for gas mileage, last time I took my car out was 41mpg freeway in the middle of winter
the 3400 is almost as easy as a eco swap depend the year of your car if you have an 00+ then an eco is so easy if its 99 and older some more work is required
keep in mid a V6 wont have to work as hard to pull a cavalier around a 4 cylinder will
use the search feature on this board the eco has be done 100s of times the 3400 has nic ewrites ups 3100 you will be wasteing you time might as well swap the 3400, 3800 takes more work and no way you can do it for 600 bucks so i be thats out, i got 500 in on my clutch alone

Not to mention that you can put the 3400 heads on the older 3100's and come up with the same result.
thast cause most people get the old one cause there everywhere they go back to 96 and they can get a 96 motor cheap compared to a 01 motor depending what yard you go to.
from the swaps i see its always the old style (few do the newer style) or 3400, the wreckers around here have 3400 like crazy
it depends where you get the motor from and yes COST has alot to do with it i paid 700 bucks for my donor car the wrecker dropped it off friday picked it up monday 700 for a complete 3800SC is a score aswell, but if your looking for a 3400 and find a newer 3100 for 400 is a steal

I'll agree on the cost. I got my 3400 with all accessories for 400 bucks, most places seem to want to sell the engine without accessories for at least 700.
exactly its base on what your can get and who u know, the cheapest is the older 3100 but if you upgrade it its as good as a 3400
when i was pricing my 3800SC this was the break down
1000 for the motor with 180 000km
500 for the Supercharger
500 for the Accessories, wiring, PCM
went to another yard got a donor car for 700 wiht less km
i might price out a 3400 there
