I believe that all of the 3rd gens use the same fan, no differences in different engines either. same radiators too.

Correct me if i am wrong but on our cars doesn't the rad fan run off a clutch which runs off the battery, or vice versa because sometimes i shut my car off and the fan runs an extra couple minutes. Now when it does is it running off the battery or is it running off the clutch which is running off the battery.

yes it should when they started this i can't remember i think its an ECO thing but it might be a 2000+ pretty sure they started this when the eco was introduced. don't think its runs off a clutch its just the PCM getting signal the water temp is too high and runs the ran even tho you have the car off the PCM still had power, they have a timed feature in them to help cool the coolent in the rad for next startup

no electric fans are clutch fans My tahoe hs a clutch fan on the end of the waterpump so does my dads 80 corvette.......

what ^^ is talking about is a ECO thing. it shocked me the first time it happened the fan runs for 5-10 minutes after you shut the car off if it is too hot. neat feature and i wish it did it on every shut off but oh well

Viper you mentioned your tahoe would a feature like that be useful on a V8 engine like yours, or does that work better on 4 cylinders the fan running an extra 5 minutes to cool the coolant in the radiator. The V8's have one big fan for the whole engine but i think some have auxiliary coolers or something don't they.

the reason the tahoe has it, is cause the fan is rotated by the engine like greg said its at the end of the waterpump. its accually a good feture to run it after that way when you start your car its got colder coolent more so for short trips i have that now on my 3800SC swap in my 99 and i have fan override hooked up so if i wanted to i could hit the fan switch run it will i run inside a store to get somethingrunning it too long will drain the battery

do the electric fans on our cars disengage when the ac is on and your at road speed, or do they run continuously anytime the ac compressor is on

Any time the A/C is on, the rad fan is on.

Also, the run-on feature is on all third gen J-cars... not just Eco's. All of my Cavaliers have done it...

Yes John, but you know what i mean you know how some cars the rad fan disengages once you hit 35 45 mph etc and they reengage when you stop again. Also when did the third generation start, in 95 or 2002.

Third Gen's started in 95 and went till 2005

as for my clutch fan in my tahoe......its comming OFF and replacing it with the Electric fan set up off the 05+ Tahoes Clutch fans are dinasaur old and ineffective. and yes that feature would be amazing on my truck as when you shut the thing off its SOOOO hot you stand by it and feel the heat comming off. Hopefully this weekend i get the E-Fans on and Monday the g/f can go to the dealer and get the computer flashed.

John is also right as always if your AC is on the fan is on and stays on.

that would explain the slight whining sound then, anytime the ac is on and the rad fan is on the engine makes a slight whining sound under acceleration or at least mine does anyway.
Re: rad fan

that whining noise is actually your AC Compressor actually spinning. because when its off the clutch for the compressor is disengages and free wheeling. but when you have your ac ON its locked and spinning the compressor

interesting viper, does the compressor spin at one constant speed all the time or does it spin faster the higher the engine rpms are.
Re: rad fan

since its off a belt connected to the crankshaft, it spins as fast as the RPM fluctuates.

Digitaln, Belt i thought the ecos used a chain other than maybe the serpentine belt.

lol

if you look at the passenger side of your engine you will STILL see a serpintine belt around your alternator LOL this also goes around the crank and AC Compressor

the waterpump has a chain and the cams/crank has a chain.

Viper so that was right then, someone told me once the ecos had more than one chain i thought they had just the one serpentine belt and one chain the timing chain that's interesting.

I know on a lot of cars if you unplug the coolant temp sensor the fan automatically comes on. On my 2004 cavalier it does not. Does anybody know if it should? I just replaced my fan, coolant temp sensor and radiator fluid.
