hey guys
i am wondering will a gas tank from a 99-00 sunfire 2.2 fit my 96 sunfire 2.2 .. i beleve the newer tank from 99- up is plastic and my tank on my 96 is metal .. i doubt it will fit but you will never know untill you asks.
2000+ is plastic
my 99 is metal

i dont see why it shouldn't fit
the undercarriage of our cars never changed from 95-05
as far as i know anyway

I was looking at fuel pump units
95 takes bosch 67324 fuel pump
96-98 take bosch 67328
99 shows by its self 67472
00-04 all take the 67475 pump unit
the reason for checking this is that 00+ use a different sender since the ecm reads the fuel level , not the cluster like in the previous years. why 95 and 99 are totally different I couldnt say. I know 95's were a funny year , lots of things are 95 only in the electrical aspect, and then in 99 that would have been a transisition year to class 2 serial data so you might have half year cars that could have gone either way dont know fro sure.
The only reason I thought of checking the pump units is in case you want to run the pump that comes in the plastic tank. I think they changed the filler neck size too but Im not sure. Any way the resistance int eh 00+ units for the fuel level are in a different range, older ones were 0-90 ohm and 00+ were 50-250ohm so you can see where the gauge wouldnt read right. If your getting the plastic tank and you cahn get he sraps , get them too cause the older ones may not fit.

I was under the impression that the 98 and 99's both use the same. When i looked awhile back the part numbers matched i thought.
99 has 2 different set-ups, pre june I think it was was the metal tank where post june was the plastic.
okay well i have to buy the right tank for the car then . the metal one . . i figured the plastic one would be the same haha .. plastic tank is better cause you dont have to worry about rust haha .. ohh well thanks guys for your help .
i don't know when my 99 was made but it has the metal tank. but any way not to hijack the thread i want to put a 2000 plastic tank in the 99. One cuz of rust and two because the pump is on its last leg. Can i use the 2000 assembly at all?
Like the pump and use the 99 sending unit?
I doubt it, The actual pump itself is the same but the guage resisatnce will be different as I stated before. The lines may hook together but the electric plug might be a different shape. IN case you are thinking about just changing your bad pump over to a 00 pump they arent made to be removed from the assembly so that wont work either.
I would recommend to just buy the correct part.

i am looking at this too i think if you swap the entire sending unit over it will be fine or swap you pump onto the 00 sending unit if guys are running the blazer pump on j sending units then why can we change these from year to year. if the filler neck is different get that too
JBO since July 30, 2001
maybe on the older ones you can swap over pumps but the newer ones are pump "assemblies" . the pump is connected with an oversize flexy straw that is heat shrunk on the pump and on the top of the unit. I suppose you could use a rubber hose for fuel injection to use instead of the flexy tube.
I see some of you guys are determined to use a plastic tank so Im going to suggest this...... get an 00+ tank, with pump assembly in it and try it, see what happens and report back. What I know for sure is that your going to have to use the pre 00 fuel level sender, now as long as it just clips on the 00+ assembly your all set if not your going to have to fork out at least 50 smackers to get an aftermarket gauge that will read the newer resistance.

I just want to make it clear on the resistance of the units. the 00+ resistance is read by the engine computer and sent to the cluster through the data stream and a pre 00 is wired directly to the cluster. thats why the resistance is different. I didnt make it up. so you cant just pop in a 00+ tank/ unit into a pre 00.

i am getting the tank, pump the whole works for free that was the only reason i basically asked. I would love to get rid of the metal tank is all. I will check the plugs and all for the heck of it.
check it out for me it doesn't matter since i'm putting all autometer guages in anyways i already have the fuel level guage

95 leave it out since its OBD1
96-98 are 0ohms empty 90ohms full
99-05 are 40ohms empty and 250ohms full
i have a 99 hooked to a 0-90 guage and it doesn't read right when i'm empty i t says i have half a tank
Every last wire on the sender is the SAME from 96-05 the difference is in the car insted of the wire goin to the cluster on 95-99 it goes to the PCM on 00-05 thats it so if you have a 99 a 00 will work as the sender plugs in to the 99 and the wires in the car wont
JBO since July 30, 2001
just change the sender use the 2000+ tank and the 96-98 pump and sender unit. or is the locking ring diffrent and iff so if you drilled the rivets out you could use the 2000+ pump and remove the sender from it and use the 96-98 sender
are you asking a question or telling us
as far as i know the tanks are the same except the ones plastic iand others metal i don't have one here in front of me
JBO since July 30, 2001
lol im not sure my self i confused myself in the middle
glad i can help then mike
i think the locking ring is the same if not the 00 ring should hold down the sender the only difference i found was in the car for the senders and GM gave them different part numbers the wiring is all the same that connects to the car
what do you have for guages in your car with the 3800
did the cav cluster work with the series 1 PCM or did yo have every idiot light on and NO tach and no coolent like i did
JBO since July 30, 2001
i had idiot light and they are all on and im planning on taking the bulbs out but i used manual guages cheap and easy way to fix the problem
99 tank is different to the 96, even if it is metal. Reason being is that ALL 99's had the evap canister in the back and the tanks are setup for that. Also, the filler neck is in a different location and the breather is hooked up to the tank on the pre 99's. That breather is not there on the 99 and up.
true i forgot about that the filler neck darren good to add that in don't think there too expensive from GM if you can't find a good one from a wrecker.
