How much would you pay?

I'm currently looking to buy a sunfire gt (seller says its a 96) that needs a new tranny.

The seller is aking $1300 cdn but is willing to go down.

I'm willing to replace the tranny myself as a I have done it before and just so happen to have a spare 5 spd.

The car is supposed to be in good condition (going to look at the car in person soon)

Seller says he replaced the timing chain and water pump a month ago.

I'm looking to pay 500-1000 tops.

How much would you pay?

Any input is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I think you're in the right ballpark. If the engine, body, and interior are in impressive shape then $1000 is not unreasonable. I wouldn't go higher, because then you get into "should be driveable" territory. If it's like most Js that age, then the $500 area is more likely.

Id offer $500-$750.
Reason being is that you have no idea what else is wrong with it till you can drive it.

are from canada and find that fair price as greg said he bought an 00 GT for 750 i bought a 99 Zed for 500 mine had a blown motor aswell

atleast with just the tranny being gone you should still be able to start the motor or atleast look things over like the waterpump try and look at it to see if it is new

if he had replaced it, the timing chain cover will either be clean or have a bunch of finger prints on it, if its covered in grease or grim hes likey bullsh*ting you

how many km does it have and see if the wheel bearings have ever been done if not they might need to be changed soon
