My fan never turns on. Its a 2.2 with no a/c. The fuse is good along with the relay. Tested the fan and it worked fine also. So the last two things it could be would be the temp sensor or the pcm. Where are these two and which is it more likley to be? Thank you.
year of car might help. And the pcm is in the passengerside fender/bumper. Take the plastic off under the bumper and you should see it. O and are you positive the fan is good? Did you test the wires going to the fan for power and ground?
Are you sure the relay is good? I would make sure of those first and if they are then i would say temp sensor. But i think you would have a check engine light also. might be wrong though
put the HVAC panel on the recirculate i think that also triggers the fan

It doesn't have recirculate. Pretty damn sure the relay is good because I switched it with another one in the box. No no power going to the fan, That is the problem. Postive the fan works. Its a 98. sorry bout that.
what kinda 3rd gen do you have the recirc is standard on all 3rd gens its the setting right above off

98 sunfire. Plain jane no cruise nothing. So i guess it isn't standard on 3rd gens. My other sunfire same year has it as you said right above off but this one doesn't. There has got to be a sensor for the fan in the rad? Or does it goes off the the engine temp sensor the pcm uses? the car runs fine so i would have trouble believing it was the engine temp sensor the fuel injection uses.
Thanks for the help.
Disconnect the IAT sensor and it should kick on... but it'll also throw a check engine light... so...
mine wouldn`t work and the fan motor was toast but it would blow the fuse when it tried to kick in been that way for over 3 years now i do mostly highway driving so no big deal for me.
are issues with the fan motors pretty common on our cars, or is it a pretty rare occurrence?
have you tried to jump power to the fan directly? also, check if there is a break in the wire somewhere. that may be the problem if it's not kicking in.
Good Point Brad, if there's a break in the wiring somewhere or if the wiring looks old may have to rewire it and go from there.

It's pretty common, I replaced mine not too long ago.
thanks for the info John, much appreciated, i know people had talked about the clusters on our cars having issues frequently but wasn't sure if the fans or fan motors were the same way.
The bad part is you really don't notice 'til you're sitting in traffic and your temp gauge steadily gets closer to red....
and then it is suddenly pegged at red and your on the side of the road with your hood wide open lol.

If the car was made with no A/C (and yes they did make some without), it does not have it.
FU Tuning
I don't know how his is set up, but on mine i actually have 2 sets of switches the left side controls the fan speed and the right controls the inside temp, blue for ac and red for heat. Now the left side might be where the recirc is.
take it to a garage and get them to hook it up to an code reader and get him to turn the fan on with it (you can test the system with the code reader) if he can then all the wires are good replace coolant temp sensor in the top coolant pipe. Thats how i did it any ways.
UNDER CONSTRUCTION
ive got a 98 sunfire and mine quit working, fuses and relays good, direct wired it and fan worked fine, doesnt work with a/c recirculate either, so i just direct wired it for now, till i gots time to bring it to a shop and have it checked, and i just plain dont feel like going through the wiring its all a pain in the rear on these cars, lol
When you pulled the relay out, did you have "12+" at 2 terminals?-- one is power for the fan, the other is power for the relay and the pcm grounds it out
did you check the fuse under the hood? I had the same problem and that fuse was blown.. of course i had to find he hard way and found the fuse after already switching out the fan.
