Another swapping thread

Flame on me if you must, but I am sincerely asking for help.

I have searched without gaining much insight into what I am trying to achieve, and am appealing to other "swappers".

What I am trying to do:
1999 2.4L engine to replace a shot 1997 2.2L

Difficulties:
2.4L engine is mated with a MTX, 2.2L is mated with a 4spd ATX.

Questions:

  1. Am I ok to mate the 2.4L to the ATX, and leave the car as an automatic?

  2. Do I need to completely swap out the wiring harnesses, or can the existing 1997 harness be used?

  3. Does the 1997 computer need to be flashed at the dealership to accomodate the 1999 engine?

Answers I have found:
Any 1997-1999 computer will work with any engine, and any harness. Is this correct?

1. the trans on the current 2.2 will not mate, you will need to swap to the correct auto trans. you can get one from a 97 z, and your mounts will work fine, I think the 99 may have the newer trans and would require different mounts, but I could be wrong. but the bell housings from 2.2 to 2.4 are different.

2. you are going to want to replace the harness. you could probably get the 97 to work, but you will need to do a lot of splicing/extending of wired since not all the sensors on the 2.2 and 2.4 are in the same spot, or have the same connections.

3. get the computer for the donor motor, a 99 2.4 computer. no dealer will re-flash a 97 pcm from a 2.2 to a 99 2.4 file.

Ok well the donor motor computer is not a problem since I own both cars. The Z24 has severe rear end damage and is not driveable. So to change the wiring harness within the engine bay should be relatively easy (i hope).

As far as the transmissions go....this now poses a new question. There are two options for the cooling lines. A 23mm without a rubber spacer, and a 36mm with a rubber spacer. How will I know which one to use (I haven't been under the 1997 yet still working on the Z).

97-99 autos are the same as

the 2.4 had the 4spd the 2.2 had the 3 spd

might as well find an newer one with low milage

not fully true matt, some of the 2.2's had the 4-speed as well. not very often, but it was an option.

yea my 99 was a 4 speed before i did my 2000 2.4 5 speed swap. If you use a 97 or 98 coumputer it will look for egr,one wire knock sensor. But the 99 is different programing because not have egr. Also to use a 99 computer on 97 to 98 2.4 harness you have to change a few wires because of this.

Ok....so we definitely have the 4 speed auto on the 2.2.

I was thinking of taking my computer and wiring harness and putting it in the 2.2. The only problem that I forsee is that my Z was an MTX transmission, and I read in the FAQs that there is a different wiring harness for ATX and MTX. The MTX has either 2 wires or sensors versus the ATX which has 12. At least that is what I understand from that thread. However, that thread was going from ATX to MTX.....but either way....I'm thinking this will pose a problem....

...or will the connections still be same the only difference will be in the number of wires running within the connection?

Yes different harnesses, the 4 speed auto is an electric shift, controlled by the computer. The computer turns on and off shift soloniods as well as monitors the internal speeds of the input and output shafts, shifting according to those sensor readings as well as engine sensor readings such as rpm's, throttle position and engine temp. So the answer is no you cant use the computer and harness that came with the 2.4 with the auto 4 speed. At least not easily. there are several wires missing some go one plug on the front of the trans, one on the tail shaft but that should be in the harness already. There is also the matter of the switch that goes on the top of the transmission. It has the park / neutral safety switch as well as the back up lights and shift interlock switches in it. And if you dont have acess to wiring diagrams, dont try it.
Your best bet is to just get the correct harness.
The computer will work with either set up, you will just have to have it towed to a dealer and provide them with a valid vin number for a j body with the correct options, like engine size , trans type and year.
