How hard would it be? No harder than rebuilding another engine. If you have mechanical skill, you'll be fine.

Is it worth it? Only you can answer that question. If you plan on making a faster engine, you need to start with the internals, so yes. If you're just looking to do a stock rebuild, then you might be better off finding a low mileage salvage engine. It also comes back to money. Doing all the work yourself will keep it reasonable, regardless of what type of build you're doing. Just make sure to have the block done by a reputable shop. Yes, you can get tools to do the honing yourself, but you're always better having the block checked for issues, and bored for proper shape.

i would be doing a stock one cause the engine has 185000 miles on a 2.4 and im just looking for a daily driver im looking to do a cavalier project.

Quicklil' has it right. If you want more power, rebuild it with that in mind (better conrods, forged pistons, P&P on the head, etc.). If you just need stock power, find a pull-a-part (www.pull-a-part.com) local to you and find a lower-mileage used motor for $110 or so. You just have to pull it out of the car yourself.

Try to find one in the same year bracket ('96-99, and '00-02) if you can. If you end up with one from the "other" bracket, you can still use it, but you'll have to fiddle with it a bit more (use the injectors from your current engine, use the exhaust manifold from your current engine, use the starter from your current engine, etc).

In any case it sounds like you're going to pull the motor. Even if you go with used one, you would be well served to change the water pump while you've got it out -- since you practically have to pull the motor to do the water pump anyway. Might as well do it while the engine is out for cheap insurance.

If you don't have a "pull-a-part" close, you can call salvage yards local to you and see if they have anything. It might cost a bit more, but likely it will be cheaper than rebuilding the one you've got.

It depends on your abilities. If you have never rebuilt an engine before, I'd recomment that you get a used one. If you have rebuilt an engine or 2, look up the parts and get a quote from a machine shop for the block work and the cylinder head work. Add it all up and see if its worth it to rebuild. If you dont have a cash issue find a remanufactured one with a warranty, might be kind of pricey though.

If you decide to go with the used one, and as stated above that the water pump would be a good thing to change, make sure that you line up the timing chain correctly or you could have some issues. If you dont know what a timing chain is, you might want to have someone change the engine for you.

Not being a smart a## just letting you know that changing, or rebuilding your engine is not like changing your wiper blades or battery.

If your going to Get a whole other engine, either used or remanufactured, And the 185k engine still goes, run it till it dont go no more. Then change it.
