Problem Shifting - Bad Trans?
Wednesday, November 26, 2008 8:08 PM
I was driving my 97 Sunfire earlier, when I tried to downshift to 2nd, the lever moved, but it didn't leave 3rd gear. It seems stuck. The lever won't move to either side, but it will move forward and back very freely. Excessively freely, in fact. Would this be a problem with the shift linkage or the transmission, do you, the informed people think?

Have somebody move the shifter while looking at the linkage. If both linkages move its something in the transmission, otherwise its something with the linkage.

I'll check it, probably either Friday or Saturday, I'll let you guys know what the results are. If I do have a problem with the linkage, I might need to ask about the procedure to replace and adjust the linkage.

Manipulating the shifter, it seems that the rear linkage moved smoothly and like normal, but the forward linkage wouldn't move much at all. I can manipulate it with a pry bar, and it'll move the full range of movement (or what looks like it, anyway.) Is it the transmission, or the linkage, do you think?

This sounds like a sifter cable. You should be able to grab the linkage at the tranny (not the cable), but the lever on the tranny and put in and out of gear. I had the same thing happen on my old 97 Z24 it was the cable.
