changing oil filter

Hi all,

You guys were great about the temp gauge problem so I have another question. Is there any way to change the oil filter from the top? For that matter, is there any easy way to change this filter? I'm about ready to start going to Jiffy Lube. Car is 96 Cav 2.2 w/3spd auto. If there was just a bit more room between the engine and the firewall..... I envy the people w/Ecotecs in this regard.

Thanks!

removing the filter on the 2.2 is pita.. raise the car high enough and place on jack-stands, with that said you should have enough room to get behind the block and right above the starter. now remember not to over tighten the new oil filter. but i do i believe its either 1/4 (im not to sure) more after you have it hand tightened. also prepare for major oil spilling lol....

oh and unless your arms are the size of a pinky, i wouldn't recommend on trying to get the filter from the engine bay.

why do people have such problems with this? turn the wheel full lock left, jack up the passenger side, and reach in from behind the tire with a filter cup. poof, you've got an old oil filter. or, peruse a junk yard for an oil filter adapter from a second gen 2.2. puts the end of the filter almost in the wheel well.

It isn't a pain after I learned this trick.

From the engine bay on the right side put your arm behind the eninge close to where the thr cruise control you can find the filter. You can see it if you use a flashlight. Reach your arm down and grab it and turn that will loosen it. Unfortunately you can't take it out from the top so follow Rich's advice to pull it out. I hated going in from the back especially since non of the filt cup grips I bought ever gripped.

This really made things easier for me.

The proper way of using the word seen. It is not I seen it that would be I saw it. He has seen the car is the right way to use the word. English class is Cool. By the way thats my sig

since you have an auto theres no way of getting the filter from tthe top a 5spd you might be able to but probably take longer then just goin from the bottom

i ran the deep filters on my 2.2 and 2.4 but you can do this on an auto 2.2 as the trans will get in the way

how is it so hard to get the filter out? I have been doing mine for about 4 years now. I just jack it up jump under there throw my arm in there grab that filter turn it take if off have my drain pan right there then grab a socket wrench and remove the drain plug and thats it.

I never had a problem getting the filter out of my 99 2200/3spd. I could change the oil and filter without ever jacking the car up. Its been a few years now but I do remember there being a trick to it, but you can reach it from the top if you do it right. Do I remember how?...unfortunately not completely, but I think M-1 is probably right.

I've also heard of people pulling off the passenger side wheel to get at them. I don't envy the you guys; don't have that problem with the manual. But, I still have to contend with is the spillage onto the exhaust pipe when I take it off... smells like ass, for what seems like forever!

u have to go from the top. its a bitch. if you cant get it off try jamming a screw driver through it to unscrew it. before that try using your hand with a rag. thats what i did with mine. and then when i finish my oil change i screw the filter on HAND tight. so all i have to do is reach in and unscrew it by hand.

Yeah go through the passenger side wheel well. I had my share of these things working at a chevy dealer. I could usually get some kind of filter wrench on them. I actually removed the filter from underneath. I'd just yank the exhaust out of the way.

Just reach in behind the motor from the engine bay, take it off, then squeeze it up on through. Always done it this way, and been changing oil in this car myself ever since I've owned it. I don't see how there is such a problem...

pay some one else to do it. no getting dirty, disposing of oil or anything. heck if you look for coupons it usually the same price if not cheaper than doing it yourself.

id rather not have some idiot at jiffy lube work on my car.

it takes about 15 mins to change the oil and like others have said if you go from the passenger side wheel well, its very easy.

I agree it's a PITA, my old sedan did not have cruise control so it was pretty damn easy I could work it from the top. The coupe has cruise control I just wear old clothes and prepare for some oil cleanup. It's not bad enough for me to pay some idiot at wal mart to do....

Its just easier to just jack it up cause then u can get to the filter and the oil will drain better.

I still don't understand how some of you find it so difficult...
it is simple.

I take the cruise control off the strut tower. 1/2 nuts and just push it out of the way. once its loose carry it up with the side that oil runs through facing up so it doesn't spill. The first time I changed my oil it was a bitch, since I do this its easy now.
