have anyone ever heard of the timing belt to break on a 05 sunfire with 37000 miles regular maintenance. we are really sure its the timing but we know for a fact that the engine is tied up. if anyone knows about this happening to our cars please help and if this would still be covered by manufacture. i would thank you in advance for your help, also would it be cheaper to swap the engine or rebuild it if it comes down to it?

Even if you were under the 36,000 mile warranty, it only covers it for 3 years. It really depends on when the car was purchased (the warranty is by purchase date, not model year). You would have had to purchase the car new from the lot sometime between Dec 16, 05 and newer. But since you are over the warranty mileage, you are pretty much SOL.

Buy stuff from CarCustoms Ebay! Won't be disappointed!
if the cain broke which i doubt probably the tensioner is pouched but either way go to the wrecker find a low milage motor and swap it you probably bent vavles and caused other issues
the only way you are still in warrenty is if you car had more then 1000miles on it when it went into serivce or dec/16th 05

only 37k, sounds a little odd for the timing chain to go that soon. How did you come to that conclusion? What did you test for and how did you do it? Might sound a little stupid but did you try removing the serpentine belt and try to start it?

there was a banging sound like metal hitting and when i put it in the shop and started to work on it the engine is tied up wont turn.
welcome to turned rod bearings and thrown rods

I was going to say the same thing.

I doubt it. The "clanking metal" symptom does sound like a spun rod bearing to me, but the OP says the engine is seized. The engine should still turn over when cranking if it were either of those two problems. It does sound like a timing issue to me, because the ECOTEC is an interference engine, so if there is no more relation between the crank and camshafts, the valves would hit the piston preventing the engine from turning over. The only other thing I can think of is the piston just getting stuck in the bore from lack of oil and forcing the cylinder to become "out-of-round" (which is probably the most unlikely problem any engine could possibly have...especially one with only 37k miles).
I would also agree on trying to start it without the serpentine belt. That way you can at least guarantee whether or not it's the engine itself.
I have no signiture
Try removing the belt first.
Dont forget that your water pump can cause this symptom too.
Is there oil in it? If so check to see if there are any shavings in it with a magnet, you may have a magnetic drain plug.
If it were the rod bearings it would have been hammering for a good long while before it seized, you would have heard it.
Pull the spark plugs and see if there are any smashed.
Remove the timing cover and see if the chain is broken or not. If its broken and you obviously ran it when it broke, then you bay be better off looking for a replacement engine. I say this cause if its an interference engine when the pistons hit the valves they bend and will need to be replaced, then I would also change the rod bearings because of the potential impact on them from hitting the valves. I have ran into a couple of interference engines that broke timing belts, and when I removed the head , several valves were snapped off and laying on top of the pistons.
