lately when i hit the gas the car takes 2-3 seconds 'to think' before taking off. what could be causing this?

the cause is having an automatic OHV Cavalier Sedan.

Sounds like you have a Mercedes engine control module.

200,000+kms. It's probably in need of a tune up.

It honestly sounds close to business as usual for that engine/tranny. An especially bad case perhaps could be helped by a tune-up as mentioned, but I usually figure on a generous 1-second lag in my car between foot stomp and torque band. More serious engine problems will likely be manifested in other ways (such as overall lack of power, noises, starting problems, etc), so I wouldn't be too concerned.

i believe it's transmission related. what i noticed is that the car runs smoother and livelier after i change tranny fluid...

Is it missing under a load or anything like that. Those have problems with excessive corrosion on the coil towers, I think its the #4, pull the wires off the coil one at a time and look to see if the terminal has turned a bit powdery or rusty. clean and reinstall or replace them.

Or , if its trans related does it only do it when you first start it after sitting overnight or for a few days. Mine has an issue that when I first start it up and put in gear it slips into gear while I hit the gas. It only does that once if it sits, I believe the fluid is draining out of the lines and converter, I talked to a tranny guy and he said that there is a valve in the cooler lines that sticks , possibly from a piece of dirt that got in it when I had it out. This is the 4t45e that im talking about but is basically the same as the 4t40e that goes in the cav.

no with mine the more i drive it the more power it looses, especially if i drive hard then it's really straggling. but lately it doesn't even matter how i drive, it just doesn't have that 'kick' anymore. perhaps it's the fact i've driven over 250k on it eventhough i take good care of it

Sounds to me like it's old. Can't expect something with that many miles to act like it's brand new.

yeah the cat doesnt sound like a bad idea.
Some of them will stink like trevor said, others will have a noticeable higher exhaust temp at the bumper. If You have a buddy rev it up in park and you hold your hand about 7-8 inches behind the outlet and it feels like its going to burn you then I would suspect the cat partial plugging up. The only way to confirm this is to remove the cat and try to look through it. It should look like a really thick piece of window screen and light should pass through every part of it.
