TPS reads 9% at idle?
Sunday, January 25, 2009 12:16 PM
I just picked up a 2004 Cavalier ecotec 2.2 5 speed sedan yesterday. So far things have been going well with the car. Well I have an HP tuners and I hooked it up to the car this morning and I noticed that the TPS ( throttle position sensor) is reading 9% at idle? This is the first time I have seen a car do this with my HP tuners program. Are the ecotec's supposed to read 9% at idle or does that mean I have a bad TPS sensor? It seems to be that the car is driving fine however if the TPS is bad it looks like I will need to replace it.

Any idea's guys?

Oh yeah this car has 91K on it. Surprised the TPS is bad already if that is the case?

I have noticed faulty readings with my HPT in the past. When my car showed more than 2% throttle opening it would cause higher idle and run rich.

This happens on a lot of the Eco's.

Not familiar with the ECO TB, but can't you physically adjust where the TPS sits, so that you can set what it reads at idle? Every TPS I've ever worked with was able to physically adjust around 10%.

Another thing I notice too is if I push the throttle all the way down it does not read 100% TPS either? I will try to adjust the TPS screw to see if that makes a difference or not.

Also should my upshift light be coming on like as soon as i shift into the next gear? Like I will shift into the next gear and like 1 or 2 seconds after i do that the upshift light is coming on to tell me to upshift to higher gear? I wonder if because the TPS is off the PCM thinks I am at a higher speed because of the TPS being off?

My car seems it idle at 900rpms. According to my HP tuner that is what the idle RPM is. I also checked my Throttle plate and it looks to be 100% closed. I did talk with another member and he said it maybe that my cfg file was not setup right in HP tuners. He sent me a working cfg with his car so I will have to test to see if it fixes the 9% TPS according to HP tuners.
