Is it an automatic? Did you try moving the gear shift if it is?

Try putting it in neutral, try turning the key, then put it back in park and push up as hard as you can.

Yes it's auto. I just checked out his cardomain. There is two cables that come off your shift. One it for the tranny and the other goes up to the key lock cyclinder. Try moving the shift back and forth some and see if it will start. If not you will have to remove the lock cyclinder more than likely. Take the plactic cover off of the steering wheel and under the right side where the key goes is a hole about the size of a pencil. In this hole is metal circle piece sticking out. Take a drill and drill it off. You will see what i mean when you pull the cover off. Now just pulled on the lock cyclinder where you put the key.

In which it shoulve come right out. You can then stick a new one in it or if your short on funds and to get it out of the lot start it with a screw diver. That way it isn't setting in the parking lot. I'm sure the steering wheel will be unlocked but check first.

Some will say it won't run because of the key cyclinder not being plugged up but both of my sunfires will run with out the wires plugged up. I always forgot to plug it back in. Although you might have to do a theft system relearn which is in the libary.

SERVICE PROCEDURES
IMPORTANT

Follow Service Procedure 'A' for involved vehicles with column-mounted ignition lock cylinders (Chevrolet Cavalier, Pontiac Sunfire, Pontiac Grand Am, Oldsmobile Achieva, Buick Skylark)

Follow Service Procedure 'B' for involved vehicles with dash-mounted ignition lock cylinders (Chevrolet Malibu, Oldsmobile Cutlass)

Procedure 'A' (column-mounted ignition lock cylinders)

Please refer to the appropriate 1997 Service Manual (section 8C2, pages 3-7; section O-A, pages 8-1 1 ) for illustrations related to this service procedure.

1. Record radio station pre-sets.

2. Disconnect negative battery cable.

3. Remove Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (S.I.R.) fuse from fuse block.

4. On Grand Am, Skylark, and Achieva vehicles, turn two locking retainers and move the LH sound insulator panel to gain access to the S.I.R. connector.

5. Remove connector position assurance (CPA) pin and separate the driver's side S.I.R. connector (yellow).

6. On vehicles with tilt steering wheel, remove tilt lever by gripping firmly and turning counterclockwise.

If necessary, use locking pliers with a piece of rubber, such as a spark plug boot, between the jaws to aid in preventing damage to the lever during removal.

7. Remove the upper half of the steering column cover.

8. Remove three (3) screws and remove the lower half of the steering column cover.

9. Disengage Passlocke electrical connector.

10. Insert key into ignition and turn to "RUN" position.

11. Depress locking button on back side of column housing assembly and remove lock cylinder from the housing.

12. Align retaining lug on cylinder with slot in sleeve. Using a small screwdriver, carefully depress the cylinder retainer and remove the sleeve from the cylinder.
Notice: Use caution when removing the lock cylinder from the sleeve to avoid misplacement or loss of retainer lug and spring.

13. Determine the tumbler numbers and arrangement by placing the tip of the key directly over the tip of the illustrated key in section OA of the 1997 Service Manual. Be sure the key is outlined by the diagram.

14. Starting with position number one, determine and record the number of each tumbler in each of the nine tumbler positions.

15. Using a small, thin-bladed screwdriver, carefully pry off the spring retainer.
Notice: Careful prying attempts, alternating from one end of the retainer to the other will result in successful removal of the retainer without tearing.

In some cases, it may be necessary to use a dental pick or similar instrument to push some of the staked ignition cylinder metal clear of the edges of the retainer to allow removal of the retainer without tearing.

16. Carefully remove the nine tumbler springs and set aside for re-installation.

17. Remove the old tumblers and discard (only after the tumbler numbers have been determined and recorded).

18. Select the required new tumblers (P/Ns 2852732 33, 34, 35) and insert in their proper slots in the correct order. Pull the side bar out with your fingers so that the tumblers will drop completely into place.

19. Insert one tumbler spring above each tumbler.

20. Lubricate the tumblers with GM P/N 12346241 Super Lube multi-purpose lubricant or equivalent.

21. Insert a new spring retainer so that its end prongs slide into the slots at each end of the cylinder.

22. Press the retainer down. Make sure that the retainer is fully seated in the depression.

23. While holding the spring retainer in position, insert the key into the lock cylinder to check for proper tumbler installation. The side bar will drop down flush with the cylinder diameter if the tumblers are installed properly. Disassemble and reassemble if necessary.

24. Remove the key and place the lock cylinder assembly into J-41340 Lock Cylinder Staking and Holding Fixture (or other appropriate holding device).

Make sure the spring retainer is facing up and is positioned directly under the punch slots.

Push the cylinder into the lock cylinder staking and holding fixture as far as it will go. The punch slot needs to be butted up against the cylinder bezel. Secure lock cylinder in fixture.

25. Hold the flat side of the punch squarely against the face of the cylinder bezel and stake the retainer in place by staking lock cylinder metal over the retainer corners.

26. Remove the punch and rotate it 180. Hold it squarely against the end of the punch slot and stake metal over the other end of the retainer.

27. Remove the cylinder from the holding fixture and inspect the retainer staking to make sure the deformed material is touching the retainer to secure the retainer in position. Repeat staking if necessary.

28. Lubricate the detent pins and cylinder retainer with GM P/N 12345996 or equivalent high temperature paste type grease. Do not use a spray type grease.

29. Lubricate the cylinder retainer slot GM P/N 12345996 paste type grease and insert the retainer spring and the cylinder retainer into the slot in the cylinder.

30. Make sure the lock cylinder retainer and retainer spring are properly positioned in the lock cylinder. Align lock cylinder with sleeve and push cylinder into sleeve. Make sure cylinder is properly retained in sleeve.

31. Install the lock cylinder into the steering column.

Insert the ignition key into the lock cylinder.

Make sure the sector is in the "RUN" position.

Line up the locking tab with the slot in the housing assembly and push into position.

32. Engage Passlock electrical connector. Verify connector engagement.

33. Re-install the lower half of the steering column cover. Secure with three screws. Tighten to 4 N-m (2.9 lb ft).

34. Re-install the upper half of the steering column cover (snap-in).

36. Connect driver's side S.I.R. connector (yellow). Install connector assurance (CPA) pin.

37. Position and secure the LH sound insulator panel with two locking retainers.

38. Install the S.I.R. fuse to the fuse block.

39. Connect the negative battery cable.

40. Reset previously recorded radio pre-sets.

41. Install the GM Campaign Identification Label.

Procedure 'B' (dash-mounted ignition lock cylinders)

ok,update time....>
I went to my local pick 'n pull today and got lucky enough to find an ignition w/ a key in it in a 98 cavi,so i got that and now I'm able to drive my car again(thank god,i hate my moms suv). But now a new prob has come up,the "theft system" idiot light is still on and my radio(an after market deck) doesn't turn on and my wipers no longer work....i checked the radio fuse(its still good) and i didn't check the wiper one but i'm guessin its still good...so my question is could the theft system be preventing theses two things from working and how do i get rid of the "theft system" idiot light??? thanx guys for all the help

theft system has no control over the wipers. For that Id check out the ground under the battery tray. Corrosion or a loose termial is common. As for the radio, dont know.

the ignition i used came out of a 98 cavi,it starts my car just fine(it starts a little hard some times but i think is to do with the anit-theft system i think) but could there be a difference in the ignition from 97 to 98 that would cause my aftermarket radio to not work and my wipers to not work either?

looks like the radio and wipers share the same feed from the ignition switch. This is the power switch that is mounted on the opposite side the key cylinder (left knee area) Kind of sounds like you changed the switch with a bad one.. I thought you changed the key cylinder. What did you do exactly?
The radio and wipers share the brown feed from the ignition switch, powered in accessories and run key positions. The wiper ground on yours is not under the battery,on left side of dash instead. sorry about that, couldnt remember when they moved it .
Any way , you need to check for power on that brown wire from the switch, and let me know what you did from the beginning. I dont see how the switch would be related to the key cylinder.
I have changed a few of those switches for similar reasons.

I changed out the broken key cylinder(after beating the @!#$ out of it to get the key part to turn to the run position so i could remove it) with one from a 98 cavi(ex. shown here,http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/ProductDetail.aspx?MfrCode=NIE&MfrPartNumber=LC6291,but mine does't have the little button on it) thats all i did,i didn't change or cut any wires all i did was swap out that one part.

At this point you need to get a test light and find out if your getting 12v at that brown wire with the key on. Then go from there. I have the diagrams right in front of me and thats what Im seeing. Either the switch bad or a freak of nature that both fuses blew at the same time.

it also looks like a piece of the plastic on the plastic box on the left side of the steering column is broken off,i can see the parts that contact when the key is inserted and turned

ok the theft system is on because you change the lock cyclinder. Look in the libary how to get rid of the light. Also make sure the wire is plugged into the key lock.. And it would have been easier to drill that pin out instead of beating it to death and breaking other things but o well.

As for the black box on the left. Yes that is your switch and you can use any from a 96 to 99. I have one around here in a box somewhere if you want it. Just pay shipping. You will also have to have a torx bit or srew driver to change it. You also have to remove the turn signal lever and when you do that unhook your battery. If not your horn will blow like crazy while removing it.

thanx for the info, yeah drilling out that tab would of been easier but at least it was a learning experience, and as for the ignition switch...i'm goin up to my local pick'n pull and pulling that ignition switch off the car i got the key switch out of...but thanks for the offer on the one u got.now will the new switch require some kinda reprogramming or something???

Re: Ignition help,i need info quick
Tuesday, February 10, 2009 6:08 PM
no it doesnt require programming.
The only thing to note here is that the special reverse torx (star)head screws are used. almost impossible to get the top one out if you dont have the correct bit.
It is very difficult to find an alternative method of removing these besides the correct bit. I have used needle nose vice grips but barely got them out like that.
just keep that in mind when you walk out in to the yard to pull your part.

i ended up just buying a donor steering column at a local junk yard and taking the switch off that, but now i have the prob of getting the top reverse torx bit screw off the busted switch on my column in my car,i may just go out there and try some needle nose pliers but idk......i found a socket in a socket set that'll fit that screw but the store wanted 20 bucks for it and it wasn't even a good brand.
On another note,i now have a steering column from a 97 cavi that has plenty of good parts on it that i really don't need...so if any one w/ a mid-late 90s cavi needs any steering column parts or another steering column(minus the ignition switch on the left side..i needed that) send me a PM
